Anyone know if there any Italian clubs at the moment? I know there was one who joined the French lower leagues a few years back but I haven’t heard anything of them since.

Apparently they switched back to Union because of the travel distance. Was it Saluzzo Roosters? Struggling with memory. Italy domestic comp has always been a union off season thing. And since Tiziano passed away, I’m not sure who is on the ground.

Yes that was them, ridiculous travel distances, even ignoring the cost it must have been very hard to get a team together for away games. It shows how well the Balkan SL does to keep going actually.

I was excited to read that article and see what the plan was for Italy moving forward.

I finished it feeling rather uninspired, a lot of not a lot is said. A few hopes, wishes and wants. Not much by way of plans.

All they do is hold back other countries by taking their places in tournaments by playing heritage NRL players while having zero meaningful domestic presence.  Until there's a minimum domestic standard for countries we'll keep having these issues.

I have no doubt this guy is passionate about Italian RL but being based in Austrailia and playing internationals there is not going to help. There needs to be feet on the ground in Italy with people wanting to develop the sport. Otherwise they are doomed to failure.

In fact having a team of Australians playing in an Italian strip in Australia has nothing to do with Italian rugby league whatsoever.

Does the domestic competition aligned with the other Italian RL board still exist?

They occasionally put news about women’s teams on X but never anything about men’s teams.

That entire World Rugby League entity seems to have disappeared - no website, social media, etc. I was curious if they still had any presence in Italy.

Last I saw of them they were promoting an ancient Roman sport of sorts that had a tenuous link to rugby.

@Gomersall genuinely. They were involved in some events in and around Rome for it - “calcio storico fiorento” if you wish to Google it.

First mistake is: the person heading your organisation, does not even live in the same hemisphere as where the organisation is based. Will never work.

And some people want the NRL to take over English rugby league.

If that happened Eddie I think the NRL would have personnel based here rather than try to run it from Australia.

There’s still stuff on YouTube from the Italy v Pakistan match played in Pakistan.

Plus a few others …

So they moved on from Rugby League and decided to try their hand at organizing something else?

When was that game played, between Italy and Pakistan?

Around 2017 I think. It was one of those Euro XIIIs type affairs but they did actually play a match. Iirc Argentina had a federation/team in it as well but not sure if they ever played a game.

I can't remember the old story but they must have had a few teams (domestic) playing in both Italy and Pakistan at the time. Is that (perhaps) the reason they set up the World RL, because they couldn't get their players selected for their respective nations (Italy at least) due to heritage players? I seem to remember the tyrant from Greece was involved in it all too, is that correct?

Just googled it and I can’t find anything about it!
