As a sports historian you need to read The Forbidden Game by Mike Rylance. This will explain the antipathy towards Rugby Union expressed by some posters.

Won't I get a job I'll certainly consider giving it a read!

Unfortunately so - the curse of being autistic is getting far too in-depth about passions, especially new passions, and I'm in a bored period as job searching is depressing as hell.

Worth knowing that if you ever find anything or anyone triggers you, you can use the "ignore" function, or "report" function.👍

May well come in handy. Managed to find the report function, but its my hope that everyone will stay cordial - at least till we play Cas in April.

Disclaimer: I apologise if this is in the wrong thread, I could not find a dedicated introductions thread.

Hello everyone! I'm Lucy, it's nice to meet you all. I have recently decided to embrace watching Rugby League and am certainly looking forward to my first SL season.

A bit of background information about me - Here are Five Facts about me:

1. I'm a native of East Anglia (Norfolk & Suffolk, I won't hear anyone include Essex or Cambridgeshire in with us).

2. I'm a graduate of De Montfort University International Centre of Sports and Culture, having received my Masters in 2021.

3. I first watched a League game when I was still doing my paper round, with the advantage that my early mornings allowed me to catch some NRL coverage.

4. I decided to support Wakefield Trinity for some reason that may appear odd but are rational to myself - I liked their badge and colours, They are an old club, and they hadn't won a major trophy (Top Division/CC since the 1960). I didn't want to be seen as a glory hunter.

5. Rugby League is a novelty in East Anglia, with only Kings Lynn and Wymondham of Norfolk boasting the Knights and Anglian Vipers respectively - with the latter missing out on L1 as Goole Vikings were picked. Had they not missed out I would have probably picked the Vipers due to location. Suffolk no longer has to my knowledge a League team (it's a poor footballing codes county with Ipswich Town being it's only professional side for the Association game, and Bury St Edmunds probably the best amateur Union side). Eastern Rhinos RL used to be based in Ipswich but is now based in Colchester, Essex.

While I'm still trying to get my head around all the rules of the game - it's a lot different from the association game - I've indulged in some CC 3rd Round action and love it. Unlike football, where I can watch a neutral game with little passion, watching a neutral RL game has my heart in my throat. It was particularly good seeing Bradford beat Castleford 18-16, as well as Halifax Panthers defending amazing in their first half against Catalans.

While I understand that having achieved A Grading Wakefield cannot be relegated, my only hope for us is that we don't come bottom. However, if Castleford doesn't play better they may be more prone to suffering such a fate... But what do I know, I'm new to the game!

I'd love to hear from fellow Trin fan and non-fan alike, as I hope to become a semi regular member of this community.

Welcome to the Trinity Rollercoaster and the Trin family

Really? Paper round. And how did that allow you to catch up on NRL and why has it taken you until now to become a Wakefield fan despite coming from East Anglia and attending Uni in Leicester ?

Yep. Started a paper round later than most (most people starting at 13 and I at 16, and I continued till I was 20) which meant that Sky was showing some NRL games on Sky (a la Fox Sports I believe) while I was eating breakfast.

Why has it taken me so long to become a Wakey fan - because I spent four years since COVID dedicating myself to volunteering in my local amateur association football community (as a club secretary, league secretary, was vice-chair of the Youth Council last season) before having to give it up this season to focus on getting paid employment.

Never actually stepped foot in Leicester, as the Sports History & Culture MA had been taught online for a decade before COVID hit and I wasn't eager to move to Leicester anyway, so I completed the year studying from my home in Suffolk.

Finally spent some time since becoming unemployed in July 2024 to engage with Rugby League content and so I decided "the household has Sky Sports, so I can watch SL this season to get some more use out of it - time to research a team to support!"

I very nearly did that same course in 2000 when I graduated, had worked a bit with Tony Collins doing my dissertation for my undergrad and he suggested it to me. Decided getting a job was my better option but I do wonder sometimes if I was right or not.

Was a great course! Got same grade as my undergrad (2:1) so could pursue PhD should I ever get some money together. Really was taught by the best in the business. Wrote two dissertations during my further education about the development of Suffolk football from 1874-1914 through a case study of a club and a look at the amateurism-professionalism debate and the AFA. I regret nothing about my education, its just a shame that due to various factors I'm finding it hard to get a job I can do without getting burnt out.

Would like to see a link to the dissertation.

Given the third degree going on here, I'm very glad that I never let slip about my subscription for watching AFL online.

Oops, dammit.

I went to Wakefield home game in the playoffs last year - the SF against York, and I came away with the sense that Trinity was a club that it would be easy to feel proud to be a supporter of.

I hope one day to be able to have the time and money to see a game, but until that day I must enjoy from a far

Hi, welcome Lucy. My daughter is neurodivergent and a Wakefield fan (because she has no choice). Nothing wrong with getting in depth into new interests.

Glad to hear it. However, perhaps this is me over-reacting, but it seems Jowitt is sponsored by charity "Beat Autism". It looks a bit "Autism Speaks"-like to me which is saddening. We autistic people don't need to be "cured" (autism is not a disease), we need to be accommodated.

Right, rant over. Just going to focus on Leeds this coming week.

Thanks Damien. Perhaps this may be controversial about these parts (being new) but I think SL should consider relegation again via sporting means not only IMG grading - although that should also be a factor - as if Wakey go all season without a win (for example) they should be able to reset in the Championship for a year re: last year.

You have jinxed them now 🤣🤣
