Disclaimer: I apologise if this is in the wrong thread, I could not find a dedicated introductions thread.

Hello everyone! I'm Lucy, it's nice to meet you all. I have recently decided to embrace watching Rugby League and am certainly looking forward to my first SL season.

A bit of background information about me - Here are Five Facts about me:

1. I'm a native of East Anglia (Norfolk & Suffolk, I won't hear anyone include Essex or Cambridgeshire in with us).

2. I'm a graduate of De Montfort University International Centre of Sports and Culture, having received my Masters in 2021.

3. I first watched a League game when I was still doing my paper round, with the advantage that my early mornings allowed me to catch some NRL coverage.

4. I decided to support Wakefield Trinity for some reason that may appear odd but are rational to myself - I liked their badge and colours, They are an old club, and they hadn't won a major trophy (Top Division/CC since the 1960). I didn't want to be seen as a glory hunter.

5. Rugby League is a novelty in East Anglia, with only Kings Lynn and Wymondham of Norfolk boasting the Knights and Anglian Vipers respectively - with the latter missing out on L1 as Goole Vikings were picked. Had they not missed out I would have probably picked the Vipers due to location. Suffolk no longer has to my knowledge a League team (it's a poor footballing codes county with Ipswich Town being it's only professional side for the Association game, and Bury St Edmunds probably the best amateur Union side). Eastern Rhinos RL used to be based in Ipswich but is now based in Colchester, Essex.

While I'm still trying to get my head around all the rules of the game - it's a lot different from the association game - I've indulged in some CC 3rd Round action and love it. Unlike football, where I can watch a neutral game with little passion, watching a neutral RL game has my heart in my throat. It was particularly good seeing Bradford beat Castleford 18-16, as well as Halifax Panthers defending amazing in their first half against Catalans.

While I understand that having achieved A Grading Wakefield cannot be relegated, my only hope for us is that we don't come bottom. However, if Castleford doesn't play better they may be more prone to suffering such a fate... But what do I know, I'm new to the game!

I'd love to hear from fellow Trin fan and non-fan alike, as I hope to become a semi regular member of this community.

For someone who claims to be new to the sport you seem awfully knowledgable about the sport, the rules, the competitions and indeed the teams in them.

To say you only made your 1st post on Monday you've certainly been busy on the forum considering you claim to be a new fan to the sport, you're language is that of a long time fan, not someone who doesn't understand the game.

You're obviously a previous member of this or an other Rugby League forum.

No one who is new to a sport knows the inside talk etc so quickly.

Sorry, i may have got it all wrong and you may have picked up 129 years of knowledge in a week and if so i apologise but the more i read your posts the more i think 'Nah, this aint a newbie'.

So who are you really? 🙂

I'm just an obsessive autistic person who - as anyone knows us as a generalisation - binges new hobbies. I am no exception, as it makes the soul-crushing grind to find a new job almost bearable.

Nope, sorry never been  member of any Rugby League forum, club, or league. Regarding the inside talk, I like to bounce off people, its been great getting to know bout the community. I've binged like half a dozen games since I joined - in live and highlight form.

Also, you should remember that I completed a Sports History and Culture MA so I have a general knowledge of how sport has developed, at least from the Victorian era onwards. This really is who I am. I apologise if it seems like I'm making this up but its the honest truth.

P.S. Regarding the rules, still so much I don't know - I don't know why a DG is only 1 point and not 2. I'm still learning the attributes needed to be successful in a position. I still giggle when I hear people talk about the position of hooker (childish I know) and I'm still trying to tell in game whether something is a knock on or not.

Fair enough but as i say you're posting style doesn't come across as someone new to the sport and the fact you have Wakefield's badge and year of foundation as your avatar too seems strange considering you are supposedly new.

Maybe i'm just reading too much into it but it just seems weird to me.

As I decided to support Wakey I thought why not make it apparent? "You always go in deep to your hobbies so why change the habit of a lifetime?"

Regarding my posting style, it is the same in my general writing style in the sense that if someone reads my CV they get one idea about me, and when it comes to interview they are taken aback at how differently I come across verbally, etc.

Weird, you say? Well that is a word people have called me all my life and they are certainly correct. I am unashamedly weird. As Bob Dylan sang few years ago "I contain multitudes"

only a rl newbie would consistently make the mistake of employing the shift key , surely?

A new fan could easily get the impression from this post that the "awfully knowledgeable" bar in RL is on the low side of not very high.

Best advice for a new fan is to study the rulebook and its history. Along with scepticism towards media coverage.

Corresponds with the Reformation stance on the bible and the clergy.

After lucy,  welcome to the forum, just ignore anyone that seems to be spoiling for an argument (there are plenty) they just seemingly want yo drag you (us) down and keep you occupied and going round in circles.

Ive got a 19 Yr old son who's asd, some of your posts are reminiscent of his whatsapps.

Two tips for you on the forum.

1. You're gonna read the word 'leigh' an awful lot, on topics and conversations where it's completely irrelevant, mad I know but it happens.

2. You're also going to read that leigh doesn't  have a train station. That happens a lot as well.

Apparently their first SL game was Thursday night, despite having got interested in RL watching NRL after their paper round and having consequently undertaken a degree and masters. Long time between drinks.

Yep. Perhaps I should have taken notice of RL in my Masters but I was just hyper focusing on getting my dissertation out and going crazy looking in a couple decades worth of East Anglian papers to see what the papers and people of Suffolk thought when Preston battered a representative side.

Probably better to put the investigation to one side now and let things unfold.

N.B. I take it back if Lucy turns out to be @Sports Prophet.

Not an investigation. Just repeating what they have said themselves for benefit of quoted poster. 180 plus posts in 6 days can’t be wrong.

Lucy, I will repeat what I posted before. Your choice of club will give you an exciting season. 👍

Given we beat Leeds at Leeds for the first time in (6?) years, game on!

Come on, most people on here have followed Rugby League for a lifetime and yet are thick as pig poop when it comes to knowing the game.

Welcome Lucy,

As I am sure you will find we are a strange lot on here. All very passionate, and I gather a fair mix of young to middle aged optimists and older traditionalists. I'm sure you will be able to pick out who fits in which category.

It doesn't matter which side we sit on, we are all passionate about the game of rugby league, but like politics and peoples opinions on how to run the country, we all have different opinions on what is best for RL.

I am a traditionalist, live in Wakefield, but support Featherstone (where I was born), and I am retired. As such I believe in P&R, if you win your league you should go up, but with caveats on minimum standards. One of my relatives has a single number heritage number for Wakefield (played in their first side).

Saying that, we are all very tribal, with not a lot of love for our near neighbours (well not on game day anyway) even across families. I have many friends and in-laws who are Wakefield fans.

Like many on here, I played the game. I played at various levels of the open age amateur game for 27 years and enjoyed every minute and never criticise anyone who has the guts to cross the whitewash and play, but it's definitely not mandatory.

So I hope you enjoy you time on here, never take things personally as it does get heated sometimes, and enjoy yourself. I can see that you have nearly made 25% of the posts I have made, and I have been on here forever (well 15 years ish).

Enjoy.

Thanks for your lovely welcome! Hope you and yours have a good season and if I may say you seem to have a really good content creator I'm Fevnut and their blog posts.

Have a great remaining weekend!

We all love The Game, we just don't always agree on what it should look like.

You usually find that deep down we all value the game over our own clubs...but you have to scratch a little deep.

If my club didn't exist, I'd still love RL.

But not Cas or Leeds.

Or Salford.

Or Bulls...

Quite like Whitehaven...
