This piece doesn't reflect well on the RLIF and its new boss

Recommended Posts

There is a lot of angst about the fact it is over 12 months since the World Cup profits were audited and still no CEO or office for the World game. Nigel Wood is now the one making these calls at head of the RLIF and, sadly, this story from Steve Mascord seems to paint a very familiar picture for RL fans in the UK.

"England's Rugby Football League didn't want him. They offered the job to an American who used to run the International Rugby Board, Mike Miller"

If this quote is true, it's quite shocking that the decision was only down to the RFL. Surely there needs to be more then one governing body making such a decision?

When it comes down to it there's a chance he could do more for the international game working at the NRL than the RLIF - does it actually have any real power?

No but it should have. The NRL and, to a lesser extent the RFL, going off on their own tangents on the laws of the game are slowly splitting it into two separate segments. not a good thing. The RLIF should have the power to adjudicate on all and any changes the big two want to implement,

The RFL probably vetoed other options rather than they were the only ones voting.

That's what I thought at first, but on re-reading it the bit that says "They offered the job to an American" implies they had sole control over any appointments. All very odd.

I take 'they' as the committee, he may have been the RFL's choice but to be offered 'they' the committee would have to agree..

Yeah, fair enough. It appears the RFL didn't want Richardson in the role. It would be interesting to hear their reason(s) why.

Nigel Wood is the chairman of the RLIF which is he would be offering the role. Now we get awful, dithering, weak leadership at international level as well as at a club level.

Its good to see in his short time he has already managed to alienate one of the biggest supporters of international RL and one of the least parochial power brokers in the NRL

Perhaps he is taking the same stand internationally as he is in the Uk. Take as little responsibility as you can and blame someone else, but make sure to keep your favourites onside and all will be well.

Richard Lewis was our greatest administrator possibly ever, but he made two huge mistakes, moving to 14 teams at the same time as moving to franchising, and making Nigel Wood his deputy.

Prior to the last World Cup the RLIF had no funding, Woods has the funding to get the organisation off the ground and to actually do something, has he, has he fek.

He's a waste of an awful lot of space.

What have we seen from the RLIF since Nige took over? Inviting Fiji to the 4 nations then deciding there needed to be a play-off with Samoa? Setting up a full ashes tour to Aus for GB and NZ for France and seeing that regress to a rest for Oz, a tour of GB for NZ which still hasn't been confirmed ( the NFL have managed to sell out a game at Wembley in October, Big NIge hasn't even been able to confirm venues or dates, we don't even have tickets on sale and the NFL have sold out), france have been left in the corner.

Nigel Wood has been Chairman of the RLIF for 9 months, he hasn't even got a CEO in place.

I wouldn't offer the role to Shane simply because I feel the person filling the vacancy needs to come from outside the sport with fresh ideas. That's not to say he wouldn't do well.

I think people are misunderstanding. Him being Chairman is a statesmanship role but he doesn't have any powers. The Board need to agree decisions and if the NZ and OZ candidates won't play ball then there is little he can do. They hardly have any money - the money for a CEO, which would be in excess of £100k a year, would be taken out of developing nations pot. And what's the point of paying a CEO in excess of 6 figures a year when they would ultimately have no power. Richardson would have been the ideal man though to try and wrest power from the NRL and he knows how to work the politics. An opportunity missed.

Mascord is becoming increasingly tedious and inaccurate in his journalism though. He finishes by saying the northern hemisphere had their chance to lead and blew it? Isn't this the whole issue? This shouldn't be about different hemispheres, the RLIF should be the unification of the world game, leading from the front, not one hemisphere wanting to do things their own way. As it is, the RLIF is a meaningless body in its present state

Agree with that 100%, was a genuine question.

everything you wrote has nothing to do with the RLIF...

the 4 nations is a RFL,ARLC,NZRL thing

tours are decided by the two nations involved

hope this helps

oh well, if he is just making an absolute clusterfsk of international RL as RFL chairman, I guess he could be doing a great job as RLIF chairman.

His achievements in the past 9 months as RLIF chairman include, failure to employ a CEO, being embarrassingly rejected by the CEO he wanted, a holiday in the Cook Islands and..........................

his "achievements...."

announcing the 2017 world cup will be in australia & NZ...

announcing the qualification process for the 2017 world cup

a million percent increase in press releases from the RLIF,ive seen more in 9 months than they've released in 9 years....basically the RLIF is starting to be run more like the RLEF...

i personally heard nigel wood on australian & NZ radio during the 4 nations lobbying for more games for the pacific nations.......and now we have the pacific double header on anzac weekend.....i'll give him half a mark for that...

this CEO thing is vastly overated,we've never had one and the previous australian & kiwi heads of the RLIF saw fit not to bother either,......as long as the RLEF continue to do their bit up here and the APRLC starts to become more like the RLEF....then the RLIF only needs to be a board that meets 3-4 times a year to sanction what the RLEF & APRLC does.......theres absolutely no need for a CEO

so yeah in 9 months big nigel has done more at the RLIF than the 2 guys before him did in 15 years...hey and im no fan of nigel wood,i think he's ruining the game here with this super 8's ######......buts he's not put a foot wrong at the RLIF yet,in fact the rumours of him cancelling the 4 nations and starting up a RLIF "confederation cup",meaning the RLIF will be able to raise revenue from a comp other than the world cup is a master stroke imo....as opposed to the 4nations which the money was split between the RLF,NZRL & ARLC
