How much do our players earn

Recommended Posts

Maybe it's a private thing but at widnes we did not hold onto a very good forward in Chris clarkson because we could not meet his terms ( 65 k basic plus bonus@s for cups and league positions)

Hull kr made a better offer

So is say 80k the expected salary for a player not likely to get picked for England

I think it's not a bad salary but it's a short career

Look at it this way: you've got probably 30 players in your SL squad sharing £1.85mill. So that's .....ummm ...err.... gee..... anyway, that's how much an average player costs. Add on £10K for every good thing you can say about them and that's about .......ummm .........

Only the top 25 players are counted on the cap. So the average cap value for a player (at a club spending up to the cap) is 74k. Of course a players cap value and how much they get paid can be 2 very different things.

For example, suppose a player earns a 50k base, and 1k per appearance in a year. The cap value for this player is 68k (as the cap assumes that anyone earning over 20k will play 18 games in a year). If he only plays 10 games, then his earnings for the year is 60k, if he plays 30 games it's 80k. Neither scenario affects his cap value, yet obviously how much the player earns does.

If the same player also has a MoM clause, paying 100k for a MoM performance as voted for by the people offering him the contract, his cap value will still be 68k, but could potentially earn 180k ...

Is winning pay factored in to the SC? Edit just read Ducky's link. It seems the RFL set the player's value and it might be a true reflection of the player's actual earnings or it might not!

What is to stop somebody like Marwen koukash paying players from one of his own companies.

Why is that illegal??????

He allegedly did and may be in hot water over it.

It's a breach of competition rules.

Dunno about SL. As an example, in NRL, if a player's contract includes a bonus of, say, $10K for every first grade appearance, they base their calculations on the number of first grade appearances last year. Same as bonuses for Test/SOO appearances.

It depends what he pays them for. If the player was a qualified plumber or electrician and was paid the standard rate for plumbing or electrical work on a construction site then that should be OK, as long as his playing contract isn't contingent on that work or vice versa.

If he paid then £500/week as a plumber and they didn't lift a wrench all year then that would be a salary cap breach. It's a breach because the SL clubs agree to a set of terms and conditions to play in SL. This is why it is also not a restraint of trade. Koukash can spend £20million/year on players if he wants but he can only field £1.85mill or them in his SL franchise.

So a club like Leeds

Turnover eleven million

What does it do with the other nine million

Clubs like St. Helens, Warrington, hull are increasing turnover year on year

Saints and Warrington and indeed Wigan are all very well run clubs but in Moran, McManus and leneghan they have international class businessmen

Is it not up to them what they pay their staff

It is. They can pay who they like what they like. But if they want to enter superleague the combined payments to their squad must not exceed salary cap.

If they want to pay their cleaners, physios, turnstile operators more then they can.

Think of car racing. Each class, or division, has rules about the type of engine, size of engine, etc. All the participants agree to abide by these rules. We all know that Ferrari could afford build a bigger faster car but they can't use it in certain classes.

SL (and Champs and Champs 1 and NRL) are the same. By agreeing to participate, you agree to the conditions placed on that participation.

Should the RFL increase the SL salary cap? Maybe, but that's a separate question.

Is that not the same as paying a players wife a fortune to be a "barmaid" in the club bar???

Just seen the new proposed rule changes for 2016, a few snippets are as follows:

1. No player can weigh above 105kg

2. No player must run 100m in less than 12 secs, players who are obviously exceeding this speed must slow down and let the opposition catch up

3. No Team will be allowed over 50% possession, once this has been reached in any 10 minute period the ball must be handed to the opposition

4. Conversion success must not exceed 75%, if a team converts the first 3 scores no conversion will take place for the 4th.

Intersting and will definitely level the comp imo

5. Leigh will still not be permitted to spend at the same level as the teams at the foot of the SL table.  ;)

Turnover is not profit.

A 30% profit margin on £1 million of, say, replica shirts would yield a profit of ~ £330,000.

The club also needs to do work on the South Stand etc.

And buy a new squad, obviously.

Leeds players must have been on some good bonuses this year for winning the treble .They always say they could get bigger deals elsewhere but they can still earn more by winning trophies
