Oxford
You've got to love the Wolfpack approach and you can't half tell they're not constricted by old RL ideas and ways of doing things. The Love RL article link below gives more details of their approach and attitude towards recruitment and everything else really. Well worth a look for us expansionists and plenty of tut tut material for everyone else, perfect forum fodder. http://www.loverugbyleague.com/news_22500-toronto-hunt-for-new-players.html 2 warning points Non-Political
Manfred Mann
The press conference was very exciting and encouraging: Also the Brian Noble interview: If the Toronto Wolfpack succeeds in getting crowds in Toronto and quickly getting promoted to the Championship, then it will open the door to a bigger North American involvement in rugby league. Manfred Mann
Manfred did you get a look at the article on LoveRL? Sure I did. The video was excellent too. Very professional. The whole thing is so smartly done that I cannot help but be excited by the enterprise. I only hope that Toulouse can navigate its way up the ladder and into Super League before Toronto arrives in each of Toulouse's divisions, because I don't want to see Toulouse and Toronto fighting it out in the Championship for one promotion spot into Super League. We need both clubs in Super League ASAP, each with a vibrant junior system and local players. This will do more than anything to grow the game in both France and Canada, and eventually spread the game into other parts of Europe and the United States. I look forward to seeing one day in the future a Trans-Atlantic Super League Grand Final between Toulouse and Toronto, perhaps played at Wembley, and beamed to many, many millions on TV in two continents

Tex Evans Thigh
Is doing an open trial really an innovative thing? Pretty sure Ive seen this elsewhere. It's more of a statement that there aren't many north American RL players so they need to do whatever they can to find some. Hardly earth shattering. Bob8
This is not directly comparable for all sorts of reasons, but caution is not unreasonable. Sacramento Express were founded this year in the heartlands of American rugby union. They have struggled. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacramento_Express They are not charging for their last game. Part of this is the backward thinking of traditional marketing, not realizing that people need more persuasion to give up their time then money. To make them give up their time, you have to make them feel involved and they have not really done this. If Toronto throw standard sales techniques at Toronto, it is unlikely to work for them. That team is playing in a joke league 2. They have lost almost every match 3. Rugby union is boring and doomed to failure everywhere it goes The guys behind the Wolfpack have been able to attract 7,000+ crowds for matches against amateur teams. I'm confident that they know what they're doing.

The philosophy of "if only people see rugby league they will love it...." has a great history of failure. I am optimistic, but it is a big challenge. GaryO
Seeing that MR Perez raised the subject of the challenge cup in the launch video the first team Toronto would be playing would be from the Amateur League's, if Toronto are drawn at home, is there a commitment in place either by the RFL or the club to meet the travel costs of the amateur club? I've been advocating for a X Factor type reality TV show in the US targeting college football and maybe even track&field athletes for years although my idea was of 2 formats. One in which NRL clubs would scour the US looking for talent in order to secure NRL contracts and the other in which trials would be held all across the US for a final squad of say 25-26 players who would then travel to Australia as the "US Trailblazers or pioneers" a la the Harlem globetrotters to play a series of matches against NSW&quennsland cup sides, the aborigines and developmental sides from say Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania(if they play league) and the Northern Territory. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that a professional rugby league club from North America playing in the British leagues structure would do this!!! Guest
Does American football have minor leagues like baseball? I'm not 100% sure but I don't think so. From what I gather there's the NFL and College football. Then there's Arena football which is played indoors with smaller dimensions and different rules and Canadian football which although played outdoors has different rules. I'm not sure it is, by the time an athlete that redshirted finishes their college eligibility their 23 years old, how many people take up a sport at age 23 and get to a pro level? Bearman
It was explained to us that the American collegiate system takes in hundreds of athletes to play "football" they major in embroidery or some such thing. Only about 1% make it into the pro game and the rest leave the programme and are hardly literate but are great athletes. If only a couple get onto the squad it will give a local feel to the team. There is no doubt that a huge " wrecking ball" type player can have a big influence on a game provided they are fit enough for RL. Stamina may be a problem.
