It was a really decent schedule I can't remember what '08 was like from that point of view. I was busy being disappointed by England each game ?
Wellsy4HullFC Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 Friday morning at 10am for the kick off?! Which idiot picked that? I'll never be able to get time off work.

Allora Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I guess they are aiming for the local audience in prime time. I do not recall seeing many games in the last World Cup beamed into Australia at favourable times for the Aussies. Its no different than any other sporting event. Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

It is very different to other sporting events. Most major sports tournaments will try and cater for their core audiences where possible. There are two key markets here - Aus and England. In the game where they meet you really would expect it to be on the Saturday. In the last WC here iirc all of Australia's games were at a weekend Oz time. Of course it wont always be possible to cater for the markets, but decisions like this affect the tv rights value as the viewing figures on a Friday morning on the BBC will be far lower than a Saturday. In 2003 all of England RU's games were Sat or Sunday. These things matter.

The problem is Dave, the Aussies have to recoup their cost by having local sponsors paying for TV exposure in Australia/NZ prime time. Friday and Saturday nights are where the money and the crowds are. How much would the English rights be worth..? The fact that Australia/NZ are 9 hours or so ahead of the UK it will be different times when the game is played in the UK and its 9 hours behind Oz times. In 2013 the games in England are played in the very early hours of the morning in Australia, from memory 1:30 or 5:30 am, in those cases it hardly mattered if it was a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, in fact I think the Final may have been very early on a Monday morning in Australia that many tried to watch before their working week started. A Sunday game in England is a Monday is Oz I may be wrong, it was 4 years ago. Edit: it was 1:30 am Sunday morning Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.
Spidey Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 The final in '13 was 2:30pm GMT on a Saturday.

But they are over a weekend when the majority of the population are not at work, school or college so can generally make the decision to stay out of bed and watch. The reality is it is pretty easy to match up games staged in Oz with decent UK times, harder the other way. 10am is great, if it was Saturday it wouls be perfect.
