TWP doesnt need away fans to create a party atmosphere at Lamport.

When are you going to get that we dont do things the old way over here?

It seems all involved enjoy the away fan element having a long weekend though......

You should go to a game in Melbourne, Townsville and Canberra or attend a game in Sydney or especially Newcastle against those teams. There aren’t many away fans.

Even in Sydney you get very small away followings. Manly’s fans especially are notorious for not going to away games in Sydney.

Probably one of the reasons they are always trying to ship them off to Perth or elsewhere......

In fairness if we are going to be so pedantic you weren't wrong to start with Los Jaguares only cross the Atlantic to Africa twice a year anyway. Hardly regularly.

Yes in fact they do.  All their away trips are across one of those oceans because that's how far they are from all the other teams in Super Rugby.   Last week they flew across the Atlantic to South Africa for two matches, later in the season they'll cross the Pacific to play in New Zealand and then go on to Australia, where they'll be exactly halfway around the world from Argentina.

Or home games it would appear

Just to clarify you can definitely fly Manchester to Boston, Manchester to New York with Virgin Atlantic.

Excellent news , loving this new ' travel  ' thread , but why it's on the general RL thread I have no idea , there are direct flights to dozens of cities around the world , what relevance it has to RL , who knows

It would cut down on the costs/travel time for any expansion outfit.

Is that the primary consideration ? , In that case it's a whole lot cheaper to stick to Europe

If it's not , then why not discuss Dubai , Mumbai , Singapore ? , Plenty of rich people there

Because its been brought up as a hassle that teams would have to fly from London to some places for North American expansion, meaning for most a 2 hour journey to the airport. In that sense its important to clarify that a city which has been muted for some time, Boston, is reachable in less than 7 hours from Manchester.

Well now you're being facetious.

Boston has come up regularly in a number of discussions, interviews, podcasts etc, (there was a specific article last autumn) when discussing North American RL team expansion. Which is the point of this thread surely? It was suggested earlier that flights to Boston were not available from Manchester (which they are), and this was cited as a stumbling block for teams who would want to spend as little time on coaches or trains as possible. I don't see what your gripe is?

That's not every away game though is it? They have a series or block of games or mini tour type thing going on, you did say they face an oceanic crossing for every away game.....

Yes it is still every away match, because they can't possibly play away without crossing an ocean first.  Naturally they minimize the number and cost of those trips by playing a block of matches when they go, that's just common sense.

So when are Boston and New York playing theirs ?

I just want to add that while not many teams fly over oceans to play, LOTS of teams fly 5-7 hours ( which is the same as UK to East Coast) within North America. It doesn't matter if you fly over water or dirt. So it is very doable.

Why? ?

Because you don't build your business on away fans , you build your business on the home ones , by all means then encourage away fans to attend , but they are irrelivant as to the initial decisions you make when setting up a club

What travelling fans?  Those don't exist over here because of the distances teams travel.  The same is true in Australia too.

In the UK it's a very big part of the game and has been for more than a hundred years. Having a big day out with fellow fans is a tradition. The banter, singing, chanting and cheering ebb and flow between the hosts and the visitors. The fans that can and do go the extra mile are held in high regard by their peers and their clubs. It's a badge of honour to put in the extra miles. I accept that our perception of big distances is parochial compared to yours, but it's just what we are both used to.

Most (UK) clubs would expect to see 20% + of their audience as visitors each week. It's a normal part of the business. I accept that's not what happens in USA, CAN, AUS, due to logistical reasons and particularly distances.

Well this is a RL Forum; but yes I agree with you, it is a big part of the UK sporting culture in all team sports.
