A number of those 3rd man in tackles were key in snuffing out the Salford attack as he took the standing man to ground as he was about to offload. In my book that still counts.

they can be, but very often 3rd/4th man in is simply to slow the PTB/ability to play the ball and/or bring the player to ground at last second just as ref is calling held anyway.

I topped 70 tackles once. It was one of my better seasons!

What an effort, 72 tackles in 62 minutes. A fine  player already at only 18 years of age.

And typical of this forum someone tries to rubbish a positive story for the game, dear me.

Which is why it was important to have the amateur club players came through mentioned/in print, certainly Ray French was one of the few to always mention this.

I think the RFL do a pretty good job of listing the players community clubs when they announce international teams.

Given the propensity of 3/4 man tackles with 3rd and 4th coming in late much more prevelent than when Retchless was playing IMO I reckon it's so, I can't absolutely prove it but it's what I beleive. It's still a fantastic effort but 3rd/4th man in tacklers shouldn't count on the tackle stats IMO.

Sorry, but I'm more tempted to believe the actual stats than what you "believe" to be the truth.

To the best of my knowledge, tackles are counted exactly the same way now as they were 20 years ago, but no doubt you will "believe" something different, and therefore that will count as the truth.

Correct.  The reason is rank prejudice on the part of some posters.  'One eyed'.

It is pointless trying to subdivide 'tackles'... its getting to be absurd. If the official makes the count then that is the count.  If we go down a hairsplitting route then the 'count' becomes meaningless.   May be we should set a test for all the officials who do the counting.  Better still lets have a test for posters before they are allowed to post...

What’s wrong with some people in RL? Why can’t we celebrate this fantastic achievement by a young lad? ?

Don't be daft, I need some people on here to interact with.

How do you know you would pass the test?

That was part of the "joke".

Before everyone creams themselves over this, there are other things that need to be considered.

Firstly, that's a lot of tackles and fair play to him fir making them. He looks a great prospect, however...

  • How many were dominant and how many were passive?
  • How many misses?
  • How many were first contact, 2nd, 3rd?
  • Why was he making so many? Was he breaking the structure and taking off after people when he didn't need to or were Salford spotting him (more likely)
  • How did it impact him carrying the footy? Poorly by the sounds of it.

Making a lot of tackles isn't necessarily a good thing. Someone is going to make a tackle, just depends who, particularly in the middle. The fact he made so many suggests to me that Salford highlighted him as a weak link and the game plan involved running at him. Sounds like it worked as Salford got on top of the Wigan forwards quite a lot, something many people have mentioned without joining the dots.

I'm not saying this isn't a good effort but it shouldn't really be lauded as something it's not. Players making a lot of tackles don't really have a choice do they.

This is something I've argued against for years , you can only tackle an opposition player if he runs at you , it usually means at this level that you've been targeted , somebody pointed out his mtrs made stat of 4 per carry ? , How did that rate with the other forwards ?

Way back when coaching juniors I never liked to top tackler award , invariably 2 or 3 won it week after week , never somebody playing out wide , it made life difficult when trying to get your team playing a structured defence as players wouldn't always stay in position

The lad us obviously quality or he wouldnt be getting time in a Wigan shirt so young , but claims of superstardom are a bit ' prem '
