So I found out today that of the sports that they're adding to the next Olympics is Flag Football. I wonder who'll win that one? I suspect if RL was an American sport it'd be long in now.

Why in the modern world do they have to ruin everything? At this rate they'll reduce medals to the point of being worthless.

Old man rant over. Although totally justified.

It's one of the optional sports, Brisbane hasn't chosen its yet.

Here in Australia handball is a primary school sport that’s totally different to the handball at the Olympics. In fact, most Australians have probably had zero exposure to the handball at the Olympics and don’t even know of its existence.

I must say, I’m really enjoying the handball and have watched many of the games. It looks like a lot of fun and is easy to follow and understand.

BBC TV coverage is driving me mad! Pundits, commentators, competitors, sports etc all good, very good.  The way they keep switching channels, the lack of informative on-screen graphics  so so annoying!  Harrumph! 😡😡😡😡

..and why is the NZ emblem a fish skeleton?

Watch on Eurosport / Discovery plus. Commentators are okay for me, and on the app there’s an uninterrupted option for all sports 👍🏼

Yes. People not wanting to pay a proper licence fee is why the Olympics coverage is as it is.

Discovery Plus is either £3.99 or free depending on your package. Cancel any time.

If the BBC were less profligate with the licence-payers money, maybe they could have afforded to pay for the rights.

The BBC weren't even allowed to bid. There wasn't a normal bidding process. The IOC were faced with an offer they decided to accept.

And even if they had been bidding, the Beeb wouldn't have been able to come within a light year of the amount approaching $1 billion that Warner/Discovery paid.

Not even if they fired Gary Lineker and gave up avocado on toast for breakfast.

And imagine the hysterics from the usual sources if it turned out the BBC could afford that sort of bid?

Noah Lyles has (apparently) got COVID, although it may be the retrospective "didn't win the gold medal" strain.

Not really the right forum to discuss the BBCs finances,so I'll close my contribution by reminding readers over the poor productivity, overmanning, £2 billon pension deficit that has been paid for by reducing money for programmes, the costs associated with scandals such as Jimmy Savil, Stuart Hall,  Huw Edwards, Rolf Harris, Russell Brand, the cost of correcting pay discrimination etc

BBC coverage has been frustrating to watch, pundits watching the fifth replay of a race while live sport goes on behind them that we are not watching for some reason, then it is shown on delay later in the same program.

If the BBC wants to save money they could stop hiring new summarisers and guests for each sport, seems to be more and more of them talking about sport and less live action on the main BBC feed

It's been explained clearly, slowly, and repeatedly why this is the case. The BBC have rights for around 250 hours of live coverage across the whole Olympics. This is because the IOC did a continent-wide deal with Discovery. Thanks to the unique way the BBC is funded, and its membership of the EBU, it was able to negotiate slightly better arrangements for Rio and Tokyo but this is how it is now at the Olympics until 2032.

I think the set-up is terrible and the BBC would be better served doing a morning introduction and evening wrap up- and only being on air when they have live sport to show.

But there's no way they can show more things live so it's either discussion about the sport or no sport during the times when they have no live rights.

Thank you for your patronising explanation.

In the rush to disagree,  it's been ignored that I wrote, "Pundits, commentators, competitors, sports etc all good, very good."

Let's just take one issue that I have raised, clearly, slowly, but read it very carefully as I'll be asking questions later.😄😄

On- screen graphics. This has nothing to do with Discovery, IOC or the automatic gainsaying of anything I post.

The on- screen graphics are undeniably poor and lack consistency and detail. Events and clips are being screened with no true indication that they are live or recorded.  Sure, if it's dark outside but sunny on screen it's a fair bet that you're seeing a recording. However, the velodrome doesn't seem to have windows.

Watching on iPlayer, the frequent switching of events and streams seems unduly pointless: you leave the room for a call of nature and return hto find that dwile flunking has been replaced by break dancing ...only it's  not been replaced, merely that the two channels have been swapped.

I could go on, and probably will; in fact I certainly will. I'm retired so have the time. 👍😱😲😄

I wasn't replying to you.

And, as I've not watched anything on the iPlayer, I can't comment on that. I've prioritised watching events on Eurosport over the BBC for a while now.
