Burgess with some interesting thoughts, saying that if players stay down for an extended time it should be classed a Category 1 and they are out for 11 days.

He says it addressed the problem in the NRL.

Warrington Wolves boss offers rule change to end 'comical' gamesmanship (loverugbyleague.com)

Joe Philbin was cleared to stay on yesterday after a head contact where he stayed down hurt.

Last week Thewlis stayed down hurt after a tackle which was close to a crusher. He was able to play on and played yesterday. Medical evidence was that he was fit. But Burgess wants him sat in the stands.

If there is an issue, it won't be fixed with stupid ideas.

And they are still moaning about this in the NRL.

Taylor-Wray is exciting to watch isn't he? Some of his movement is a little Iestyn Harris-esque imo.

Not sure if you watch the NRL, but CTW is almost identical to Reece Walsh in terms of size, balance, footwork and style of play.   Worth a Google or YouTube search.

Yeah, I can see that, his footwork is outstanding but he does it at pace. Really exciting.

My understanding is that it only relates to head knocks, so crushers and other injuries wouldn't be affected.

I think it's an interesting proposal worth considering/exploring, but I don't know whether I support it.

Thewlis also went down following a high tackle as well as the crusher last week.. And Philbin would now be out.

We saw unintended consequences at play yesterday with the Philbin HIA nonsense. That was because of time wasting previously.

It's basically a proposal for a 1 match ban for getting fouled and hurt.

Yes it’s a nonsense idea just because people are getting frustrated.

If this is a genuine problem that means a change is needed, you just scrap the VR interaction here and deal with it in disciplinary. If players are hurt (like Philbin yesterday) allow them to get treated and assessed without fear of being labelled a cheat or being banned.

You don't need to start messing with HIA protocols.

Absolutely take the review away take the ball off the player and play on its the only way I see dealing with this without somehow punishing the player being fouled. As I said yesterday I’d then like to see it accepted that fouls that go unpunished in a game should get a heavier punishment at disciplinary.

Yes.

The Philbin incident threw a spanner in the works for many yesterday. If you listen to the noise recently, people are doubting that a player could take a hit to the head, be injured and then be cleared to play on after treatment/assessment. Nobody is calling Philbin a cheat for the above situation.

Late on in the Salford Catalan game yesterday, there was a far worse double shoulder to the head than anything in the Wire Saints game. It was just put on report. It's the inconsistency that is the main problem.

That was fine, it really wasn't clear whether there was contact. On report was the correct decision imo (if we're talking about the same thing).

Saw philbin in town last night,  his left eyebrow came in the pub about two mins before he did.

He's starting to look like the player from five years ago again now. Pleased for him as he has had a bad couple of years.

It's a horrible situation for the authorities to try and tidy up, but as ever my opinion is they need to somehow push this back on the players and coaches.

It's obvious some are playing the rules, which frankly is disgusting when there's a worry players actually injured could be looked at for cheating.

No idea how they would do this though.

Where it does come back to the RFL is that some really quite bad tackles are being waved as play on by refs. It's a tough situation.

Yes, it wouldn't be perfect.

Coaches would complain that their player has passed a HIA but is banned and we'd go back round this cycle again.

One other area that was interesting is that Burgess complained that a player stayed down and then stayed on the pitch after treatment. Yet when the Leigh player left for a HIA he labelled it 'convenient'.

Almost like he has a bee in his bonnet and is making it up as he goes along and nobody is challenging the inconsistencies.

I must admit I think only Brian Carney is being challenging on this. I think at the moment he is by far the best speaker we have in RL.

I think something that isn't being discussed/realised is the shocking amount of head contact players were taking prior to this crackdown. Just on minor incidents as well.

You hear the stories of players saying they werw concussed, couldn't remember games and just got up and back into the defensive line on instinct.

It's mental

I think it is good to challenge and examine points, regardless of one's view. I agree on Carney.

Carney actually challenged Burgess' view and stated that Vaughans tackle was bad and everyone agreed and he was banned, so we got the right decision.

Burgess deflected by saying it was the same as the Hull KR binning.

The goalposts just move. The hierarchy appears to be 1. Faking/cheating, them moves on to 2. Not a card, then 3. Inconsistency.

It becomes almost impossible to address the issue when the goalposts move as much as they do.

This isn’t just head knocks by this time of the season most of the players in the league can only get on the field up to the eyeballs in pain killers.

Burgess is coming across, at times, as a bit of a moaner when things don't go his way (not unlike others.)

Or as it's commonly known as "a coach"....
