Bedford Roughyed
Necessary but open to abuse by the unscrupulous. With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!
Futtocks
As far as asthma is concerned, proper medication is vital and sometimes even life-saving. As someone who actually coughed himself unconscious once (and suffered hideous choking nights again and again and again), it's a nightmarish thing to suffer. To be any sort of professional-standard athlete with that disease, even on medication, is a colossal accomplishment. Bedford Roughyed
I think the issue isn't that some people need asthma treatment, it's how many do... gingerjon
Lance Armstrong got a TUE. Pretty much sums them up for me. Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Derwent
The timings of the apparent need for Wiggins to use them are very suspicious. Not required before 2011, not required after 2013 either. Murky. I’m not prejudiced, I hate everybody equally

Bedford Roughyed
Without TUE's you would see longer injuries, no asthmatic athletes and athletes choosing health over career? Its a system that needs improving (doctors can't be trusted to only do the right thing anymore sadly). However, having all the info open isn't a win win, what if you wanted to keep an illness secret? Or had asthma and would now be called a cheat? With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. JohnM
Indeed. We seem to be doing well across the board in the Olympics and in the Parallel Olympics, too. Seems the plans, the investment, the sacrifice, the dedication, the training etc are all paying dividends. Won't be long before some knocker will be along to rubbish it. gingerjon
It's the people with dodgy thyroids that seem to really punch above their weight. Good. I'd hate to see people with such legitimate health concerns denied the chance to repeatedly win major titles. Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. JohnM
Whereas we "all" know they do cheat, or at least wish they did cheat. The distain of "winning " is not just restricted to "opposition " parties and "coalition collaborators".

The distain of "winning " is not just restricted to "opposition " parties and "coalition collaborators". I'd be quite confident of repeating this statement: "Given what we know about the sophistication of micro-doping and of drugs used to aid recovery, both those that cannot be detected and those that can be detected but which can be given for medical necessity, it is becoming harder and harder to see how, especially in sports that require significant, repeated exertion and quick recovery over a short time, a truly clean athlete could be on the podium." There are people doping to beat their time on Strava. Four in ten athletes across all Olympic sports have admitted to doping. But, you're right. It's lefties and their hatred of success. Mark S
What ever the situation was the GB athletes will be OK as they have the biggest PR agency in the world backing them (the BBC). I agree about people being able to compete on a level paying field, but surely it is open to abuse.

Oh and Newsnight covering it all last week. Yup typical BBC not reporting it, apart from the bits they do.. JohnM
I don't think separating nationalities helps, you then start to sound like you are saying Brit athletes don't cheat. But we want them to have cheated so we can wail and gnash our teeth, so we can wallow in the gutter of corruption face down, so we can flagellate, so we can regain our world title of plucky losers or at best Alf Tupper style winners. After all, how can anyone win anything without cheating? Seems we are very keen to believe the results of the state-sponsored theft of private property. If the rules are wrong, then change them. If not , then move on.
