Interesting video, dunno how Widnes scored any tries, with all the young fans lining up in the in goal area. Would never happen now.

People coming on the pitch used to happen regularly in those days... think of "They think it's all over" in 1966 or of Erica Rowe (no, I'm not showing a video of it !). Even if you see the video of the 1957 RL Championship Final between Oldham and Hull at Odsal, it shows supporters going onto the field before the match and tying scarves around the posts and then playing a match between themselves on the pitch ... the bobbies then just used a quiet word to disperse them. (And that was also when people had respect for the police !)

The same happened at all sports (rugby, football, cricket and even when the crowds used to charge onto the fairway at the last hole of the Open golf) and there was no trouble, just people being excited. It all changed when hooliganism became rife at football and people started invading the pitch for no reason other than to cause trouble ... hence restrictions on pitch access came into force.
