This is an enjoyable game. The RAF have brought Owen Hunt off the bench. His nickname is "Dolph" (as in Lundgren) and the name's pretty accurate - a ginger Ivan Drago!

Personally I love watching Tara Jones play as well as referee.

Yes, that first half has been very well refereed

Also like the way that in our sport the players respect the decision made by the referee even if a decision is debatable.

It used to be like that but unfortunately no longer

The Navy pull ahead after 64 minutes. An excellent, competitive contest to kick off the BBC's 2024 RL content.

Looks like the Navy's sealed the win, with a converted try making it 18:28 with less than 5 minutes left.

And Edinburgh Eagles win 28-22 at Lowca. Is this the first ever win for a Scottish team? (in the cup)

I'm not sure but it could well be. Great win for Edinburgh.

Just in from Prospect Road, where Yorkshire League Doncaster Toll Bar edged, 22-20, North West League Ashton Bears.

Great cup tie, watched by about 425 spectators. £3 admission included an eight-page printed match programme. Maybe about a hundred following the visitors. Quite a few present from Toll Bar's local rivals, Bentley. Doncaster RLFC bob hats in evidence also.

Ashton led 10-0 after 20 minutes and 16-6 at half-time. But Toll Bar, playing up the slope in the second half, with a low winter sun behind them, stormed back with three tries to move 22-16 ahead by the 72nd minute. From the last play of the game, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Ashton went over in the corner, too wide for the conversion to be added to force golden point extra time.

Toll Bar's reward is a second round home tie with National Conference League big guns West Hull.

Attended the SW Jets game at Ebbw Vale

Firstly kudos to Stanningley who stayed down the night before and will also stay tonight.

Hopefully they will receive traditional valley hospitality.

Less so in the game. One incident ten mins from the end resulted in two Jets and one Stanningley seeing red, with some in the crowd indicating they had drunk too much, but were not adverse to throwing it at players. There were two further cards, I think yellow so we finished with 21 on field.

The game was however much much more than late incidents and I was impressed with the visitors who should have scored more. NCLshould always beat a feeder league side but especially in the off season it is easy to slip up.

A superb ground with a big stand and probably higher terracing on the far side than exists at any remaining RL ground. Overnight frost did not materialise and pitch played well.

Our party had needed to check the weather in the build up with Jets owner who kept us informed and took time to introduce himself on what would have very busy day.

First RL of the year and already a contender for day out of the year.

Bring on round 2 and a pity Edinburgh are not at home.

As expected, the two London sides had comfortable wins.

The next round will be crackers with Wests Warriors taking on Rochdale Mayfield and Hammersmith Hills Hoists (last years Southern Conference winners) against West Bowling.
