Will 2024 be the best NRL season ever?

What a great read.

It could really be used as a sales pitch as to why Christchurch should be a must for one of the expansion teams. Hopefully V'landys reads it.

I think both the NRL and NZ2 bids teams are favouring a South Island team headquartered in Christchurch with maybe playing a few games in Dunedin.

anothet ace a Christchurch based team could play is the amazing new 30k stadium that is currently being built.

Can we stick to the topic instead of yet another debate about RU players and play the balls

Why are play the balls out of bounds for the discussion, it is one of the reasons why the NRL has become a competition that favours the attacking teams and so the essence of the game?

Oh for heaven's sake, these kind of po-faced attempts to corral threads really are tiresome.

Bad enough, when the mods do it.

On a narrow reading of "Will 2024 be the best NRL season ever?", how does this measure up? 👇

It’s not something I ever notice tbh. There’s a lot more to focus on than if they play the ball correctly. Everyone to their own though

Yes, I think the play the ball in Super League is better than the NRL now which would have been unthinkable a year or two ago.  It is full of step overs with absolutely no attempt to put the foot anywhere near the ball.

Indeed , what a turnaround . The NRL do I think know  it’s a mess but can’t do / don’t want to do anything about it this late in the season . The real issue is why referees have let it disintegrate when they were so hot on enforcing it not long ago .

It's incredibly easy to enforce a proper play the ball - just penalise those that are not.

But we have a sport that won't tolerate the referee's enforcing the laws of the game because we say they are ruining it.

Some laws it appears are  enforced as those are the ones refs are told to concentrate on , and some laws seemingly aren’t important and are ignored or  just let go . That’s the perception I get anyway

Your initial point was fine, then it just began to turn into a discussion about enforcing the play the ball, that we've had a million times, as well as another about if RU players added anything 30 years ago

I think the root causes of the decline of English pro RL is far way deeper than the signings of union players to be honest.

some of the greatest ever British RL players came from rugby union and did so for nearly a century.

And some of the worst.

The bears will need a decade or so to establish themselves within the Perth/western Australia population but will be a good draw in Sydney from the off I feel.

not sure how league gets bigger in NZ without the addition of NZ2 to the NRL.

I think the NRL today has just about over taken the winfield cup of the early 90’s although it was obviously a different era in which top RU talent from NZ was regularly plundered.

You meanthe late 80's/mid 90's of the Tina Turner years...earlys 90's just means 1990/1991/1992.

Just watching the Penrith - Roosters game. The PTB in the NRL this year has been a mess.

Some of these 'PTBs' have been dreadful. The constantly emphasis on speed over everything makes it annoying to look at sometimes.

Don't care as I'm been loving the NRL this year ( like every other year since 1995)

Record crowds and tv viewing figures would agree with you.

Mr blobby once topped the UK charts...

People are allowed an opinion on the game counter to "it's the bestest thing ever". You and loads of others enjoy it, some of us are disappointed in how the NRL games are now played.

Last nights Leigh v Hull KR game was better than the vast majority of NRL games I've seen this season as defence was as good as attack by the winning side, and almost equally as important.

It`s a pity the referees aren`t as lax when it comes to forward passes. That call against Daniel Tupou with 17 minutes to go was a bloody shocker. Very sharp eyed when it comes to imaginary forward passes.

Laxity over PTB rules, combined with phantom forward pass calls, can mean (as others have noted) that too many tries are the product of sheer weight of pressure rather than skill and creativity. Said pressure resulting simply from the speed of the game.

Due to media and fan ignorance, officials constantly cop it for missing supposed forward passes. Game threads on TRL and LU are the favourite haunts of crazy fulminating forwardpassphobes.

Being optimistic, perhaps refs occasionally feeling the heat after incorrectly calling one is a salutary corrective. Reminds them where the benefit of the doubt should naturally belong.

I think off the field its clear the NRL is booming and is doing better than ever before by various metrics. On the field is obviously a bit more subjective in terms of absolute quality but I have still found it immensely enjoyable with great athletes and skill on show every week.

Downside is seeing Cronulla in the finals....wish they relocate.

Looks as though Cronulla will play their semi against the Cowboys at CommBank. Hilariously, their management wanted Shark Park. If that's too big, there's always the field at Cronulla High School.

Looming contrast on Friday with the Swans prelim at a full SCG. Widespread angst on LU.

Prising Sharks fans out of the Shire is a tough one at the best of times. Got a nasty feeling most will be on their sofas for next week's game.
