2blackrooks Posted September 21 Posted September 21 No idea to be honest but the links between Scotland and Newcastle are strong, Though good to see this fixture on the cards. Hopefully next year we can get Wales involved and some kind of Celtic cup. Could involve the French domestic side with The Netherlands. If Euro rugby get their act together the likes of Serbia, Czech Republic, Greece, Norway, Germany could playoff for a right to join the Celtic setup Winner playing off against the bottom club etc 3

Phil W Posted September 21 Posted September 21 I'm one of these people who have moaned about the lack of international rugby league, so this news is welcome. We have to re-start from somewhere and if that means Scotland v Ireland in Gateshead, then so be it! I'll more than likely go along and support it. 1
OriginalMrC Posted September 21 Posted September 21 Sorry but it's time to stop sanctioning full international matches in 3rd countries. Play them at home for God's sake!

I agree but maybe that’s not viable for them at the moment. It probably is an aspiration and hopefully they’ll start playing in Scotland on a regular basis once they get playing regularly

This is a country that played at the last world cup!

This is a country that played at the last world cup! I don’t think they need to give up. They just red to rebuild and increase the amount of players and clubs domestically as well as building the profile of their national team. Playing international games on a regular basis and building up the domestic scene is the right way to go. I do agree that it would be much more beneficial if they can start to play their internationals in Scotland though

gingerjon Posted September 21 Posted September 21 Genuinely puzzled as to how it's that much cheaper to play in Gateshead than Glasgow. 6 1 Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life. (Terry Pratchett)

Sad but true But that's sort of what I mean. Assume and even split between those being in Lancs and Yorks, and there's really not much difference between Glasgow and Newcastle in terms of reach and (presumably) price. 2 Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. It's probably as simple as slightly cheaper stadium charge or similar, or maybe hotels were £10 per night cheaper. Absolute rubbish.

Players can all travel there and back on the same day but they'd need an overnight stay in Scotland. Whatever the reason I don't think it can be justified if you want to be taken seriously internationally. 2
17 stone giant Posted September 21 Posted September 21 I can understand why using Gateshead makes partial sense - given the Newcastle Thunder aspect - but at some point if you're going to commit to having a Scotland team, you've got to build up support for it by playing matches in Scotland. 4

Or, the most likely alternative is to just go off and watch other international sport, which is what many people do when their needs are not met.

Ireland haven't played at home since 2019. Covid explains a lot of things. The Irish Federation must have virtually no people in it.Tweets and Facebook are virtually free. Virtually no promotion of these games.

I'd go, as it's relatively local for me, but it clashes with England v Samoa doesn't it?
