Britain adopts Gregorian calendar 1752

Have you have ever wondered why the tax year in Britain starts on the unlikely date of 6th April, rather than 1st January? The official start of the year on the Julian calendar used to be Lady Day (25th March), and this was also the official start of the tax year. However the introduction of the new calendar and the loss of the eleven days in 1752 meant this date was changed to 5th April in 1753, to avoid losing 11 days of tax revenue. Another change was made to the date in 1800, as this would have been a leap year in the Julian calendar but not in the new Gregorian calendar. So again the tax year was extended and the date changed to 6th April where it remains to this day.

On this day in 1972 I started secondary school at Wath.

There are some classmates who remain good friends. Some who don't. Some who've died and some I'd rather not know now.

There are some teachers who were an influence on my life (though I didn't know it then) and some who live long in memory.

50 years ago ffs. Where did it go eh?

That 72-73 school year ..... fev won t'cup n'all.... the season of my first ever game at post office rd.

"Of all my fifty battles, the most terrible was the one I fought at Borodino" - Napoleon Bonaparte

On this day in 1812, Napoleon's Grande Armee was approaching Moscow after fighting skirmishes with Russia right across the latter's territory for months. The land between the Russian border and Moscow had been scorched by the Russians, they had burnt and destroyed everything that could have been useful to Napoleon's army in a bid to stop him in his tracks but he had almost pursued them right to the walls of the Kremlin.

The Russians decided they would make their last stand at a small village 70 miles to the west of Moscow called Borodino. This was Napoleon's opportunity to decisively defeat the Russians and conquer all of Europe. What followed was one of the bloodiest and most harrowing battles of the Napoleonic Wars, the Battle of Borodino.

Napoleon was uncharacteristically cautious in his approach to the battle but would score yet another victory. His caution however allowed much of the Russian army to escape the field of battle. That army would retreat to Moscow and not wanting the great city to be captured, the Russians would burn the city to the ground. The Battle of Borodino and the burning of Moscow arguably put in motion the downfall of Napoleon. When Napoleon arrived in Moscow he hoped to find supplies for his army, somewhere to shelter for the winter ahead but on finding the city in flames he decided to retreat from Russia.

Due to the land being completely scorched by the Russians in the advance into the country, the Grande Armee had no resources to sustain them as they retreated through the harsh Russian winter and their supply lines were completely cut off by small Russian companies using guerilla tactics to attack the lines.

When Napoleon finally left Russia the greatest army ever assembled had been reduced to just a tenth of its size through starvation, freezing conditions, disease and desertion.
