Campaign for Sir Rob and Sir Kevin.

This smacks of grandstanding from a paper who'd normally be happy to see Rugby League exterminated, and doubly so for the foreign players.

There is a well-established method for submitting names for honours.

Tricky. I so very nearly didn't click on a Dodgy Excess link but their argument is as clear as day. Tricky.....

Exactly! And it's not a well meaning fan wasting time on another petition rather than going through the actual process. The RFL can easily name the Man of the Match award at the Grand Final after Burrow, of course, which would make a lot of sense.

Dunno why anyone cares about the honours in this day and age.

Kevin Sinfield is a wonderful human being and so is Rob Burrow.

Why would they need some posh sausage to tap them on the should with a sword to confirm that?

I know what you mean. Why attempt to justify this circus by genuine inclusions? Tricky...

Ignore the honours system, we don’t need a skewed system to honour our greats.

We have our own. Kevin is already Sir Kevin.

Rob is on another level - he will have to make do with our eternal collective respect and admiration.

Every year for many years, there is a chorus of complaints on here that rugby league people are ignored by the honours system whilst rugby union types are awarded gongs of various sorts.

Every year for many years now I have patiently explained the process of nominating individuals for such awards, yet there is no evidence of the naysayers actually doing anything other than moaning in true rugby league style.

Now all of a sudden, when a newspaper runs a campaign to right that wrong, well nah, we don't want your pesky awards anyway.

In addition, a constant complaint on here that the media ignore our sport. Then, when a national title does pay us some attention, it's grandstanding.

Of course, this is nothing to do with the fact that the newspaper involved is a right wing Brexit supporting paper. Maybe it is more to do with the  chippiness and eternal victimhood so characteristic of much of the fan base.

Compared to most national newspapers the Daily Mirror gives the game column inches and i know as i buy it every day.

How often to you but a national newspaper and which one?

Don’t join in with the campaign if you don’t want, it’s entirely personal.

But let’s (as JohnM highlights) put to bed the annual moans about RL not getting any recognition as it’s not “in bed with the establishment”. The article is *very* strong in putting the case for RL and how it’s been treated so shabbily over the years and yet the initial reaction is a childish “Tories!” Socialist worker type response.

This actually isn’t about you and your personal opinions or political views, it’s about getting some long overdue recognition for two modern day RL greats.

The analogy about cake and eating it springs to mind.

Lol, stay off the internet mate, you’re clearly losing the plot.
Do they have a go at the umpteen foreign players in football? Do they want to see them “exterminated”? Or maybe, just maybe, you’re not quite as fair and balanced as you like to think, just a mirrored version of the people you hate?

Well, the working class media certainly haven't picked up the baton on this....

That may be the case with the Daily Mirror but what about the Daily Express?

I don't know. I don't buy Tory supporting newspapers, but i do glance through them sometimes on supermarkets shelves

Does it do good Rugby League coverage?

The Daily Mirror is now running with the same campaign, under an "exclusive" banner.

The issue is, in my view, do people want RB and KS to be knighted or not, not whether any of the tabloids cover rugby league.

I would like them to be knighted as it would be long overdue recognition for the sport. Its not a system I agree with but many do and it would certainly help create a positive impression of the sport, which can only help with looking for more blue chip sponsors. Mainstream recognition is something the sport always craves. Recognition on that scale can't be a bad thing.

I do think its grandstanding but think the same when any newspaper launches these types of campaign, no matter the political leaning. It is just another mechanism to drive sales by jumping on a popular topic. In this instance though, and for once, it benefits Rugby League and obviously Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield.

I'd say it was more important to raise awareness of Robs illness and what it might do for MND than if a few sniffy posters on TRL don't approve of the newspaper in question.

It might benefit rugby league - which would fair - but more than that it will benefit the whole MND sufferers.

Absolutely not having a dig at you because you are totally reasonable btw.

Thats fair and I absolutely agree that it is most important to highlight MND, which Rob and Kev have done tremendously.

I simply focused on Rugby League and the honours system because that is what was being argued over until then and was answering John's question.
