League 1 unsustainable?

It’s not an obsession but the other alternative would be a 22 team Championship

Or a 22 team league where teams don't play everyone else.

Or a 12 team championship and a 10 team League 1.

Or a 14 team championship and an 8 team League 1.

The possibilities are not quite endless but there are a few.

How do you think the game survived before SL and Sky money came along?

Surely the aim of investment is to promote financial stability though. A company can only survive so long on just investment. At some point they have to prove their own profitability.

Think you too would struggle if your CF was cut to 20K

There's been quite a lot of whinging going cos the Sky deal has been slightly cut this last week or 2

But my point is that any team should be financially stable without centrally funded investment. Investment is meant to aid business growth, not be relied upon.

The RFL can of course grant exceptions to the 'minimum facilities standards' required for each division, as they have for a few SL and Championship clubs

They did for us with the game against Cornwall at Rhyl as we had arranged a junior festival for that day when we were still going to play at the Erias in Colwyn Bay and we wanted to keep the match in N. Wales.

Without a doubt. IMO too many clubs simply coast along and do the bare minimum to get by.

I'm pretty sure they must have done the same for Midlands Hurricanes this season. Theres definitely not undercover seating for 200 people where they're playing at the moment. Of course they'll be going into the actual Alexander Stadium next season which will be a huge space for the 'Canes. Not sure what their income source will be though.

L1   10 teams = 18 games plus NOWT = 18 games

The league with the lowest CF given the fewest games and less chance to grow income from match days

L1 Shown no respect from RFL

Of course, it was open to the League 1 clubs to say they'd like more games.

Tellingly, they didn't.

3 x12 if they run L1 same as SL with a mini magic and loops so we get 27 also

No they asked them at the 11th hour when W Wales pulled out, way after fixtures were out and all the teams had budgeted for this years fixtures and players and its not easy to budget when you are only given around 15K.

If they knew now that there were more fixtures next year then they would plan for that.

No different than planning when you have won promotion - you do that before or at end of season not 3 weeks before next season starts.

Well, we've done it before.

League 1 can have 27 games.  If they want them.  It's not the RFL stopping them.  It's themselves.

They could've had loop fixtures even before the WWR debacle.  But they didn't.

My post wasn't referring to 'one off' exceptions....

You’ve been told MoK!!

Well, it wouldn’t be hard to come up with two purposefully loose regional conferences (you might have to use the M1 as a dividing line for the West Yorkshire clubs). I can see the attraction from a local derby/gate revenue POV.

Yes, that NRL malarkey is a load of rubbish isn't it?

I think the appropriate comparison is what happened to the Brisbane league once NRL expanded to incorporate a new Brisbane club…the Broncos.

The Brisbane league sunk rapidly into a community level game with tiny crowds.  The difference with the lower leagues in UK is the lower level teams in Queensland are funded through the leagues clubs.

Sure.

Lancashire/Cheshire/Cumbria/North Wales/Cornwall + a few west of West Yorkshire in A. Rest of West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Newcastle, Midlands, London and France in B.

It wouldn’t be anally rigid borders, same as geographic divisions in football leagues aren’t rigid. Pragmatism etc.

I agree. There definitely needs to be some kind of shake up below SL. Some clubs are barely more than amateur. Clubs like Hunslet, Doncaster, Workington, Whitehaven and Oldham need to be included in something better than the current League One

Looking forward to the Workington Cornwall derby.

Well, if the aim is sustainability in a world of ever reducing central funding and no TV deal then guaranteed fixtures between, say, Workington & Whitehaven or Batley & Dewsbury might be the way forward.

Just an idea anyway, I’m not precious about this stuff.
