Why Dominic Young is on course to be declared in coming years the world's greatest winger.

Unbelievable.

One of the world's greatest coaches, Trent Robinson, saw enough of  Dom playing for England at at the 2022 World Cup to offer him a 4 year contract at the Sydney Roosters starting in 2024.

Being coached by Trent Robinson, and playing outside of centre Joey Manu (Golden Boot winner 2022) and long cut out pass prone half back Sam Walker, is only going to make Dom Young a bigger sensation than he has already become playing at the Newcastle Knights.

For comparison's sake Dom Young is 2 inches taller, and much faster, than the well established 32 year old Roosters left winger (and Tonga and State of Origin rep) Daniel Tupou (media nickname "The Giraffe").

He has a lot to work on before getting close to "worlds best winger"

Dom has some work to do, not a lot, "before getting close to world's best winger"

Dom is already on the Dally M nominee shortlist for one of the two best wingers in the NRL in 2023.  My bet is that he will be awarded the title along with Dallin Watene-Zelesniak. We will know in about 12 hours from now.

And IMO that might make him one of the in form wingers in Rugby League, he still isn't that close to being the world's best. He has a lot to work on, mostly around his defensive positioning, where he finds himself in the wrong position quite often. I imagine it has a lot to do with playing centre most of his career rather than wing.

He has a lot of work to do to get to a point of being secure on the wing, when comparing to Makinson or some other wingers. Or even under the high ball while in defense where he often isn't in the right position to catch the ball on the full and misses when he goes up for it.

I've watched almost every Newcastle match this year because I enjoy watching Young play, I think he is a very talented RL player, but that is mostly when he has the ball in hand. Positioning has some more work to do, and IMO, his work rate in defence and when trying to follow breaks, etc. He can be quite slow to react at times.

DWZ got the award, but Young didn't The other wingers' Dally M went to Jamayne Isaako, who's had a very good season.

Isaako not only scored 24 tries this season, but he also kicked 73 goals. He was always going to be a contender this season, whether Young was dropped or not.

Thoughtful observations. I accept your careful and astute criticisms of Dom's performances at Newcastle.

However my main point is that Dom is moving to new playing environment which should accelerate his improvement..

First he will be at a better club than before, where he will get better coaching than he had at Newcastle, via Trent Robinson and his assistants.

Second, he will be playing outside more talented team mates than he has had at Newcastle -- namely Joey Manu, Luke Keary, and Sam Walker.
