The difference of course is the money. 100million for a season in PL, then subsequent parachute payments. Really wouldn't surprise me if Norwich were in the top 40 richest clubs in England. And as Norwich never spend enough to stay up, it's up, down, up, down etc My prediction is Norwich will be in PL, seasons '23-'24, '25-'26, '27-'28 ad infinitum . Edit - Norwich are rated 30th richest in England, not in top 50 Europe. Edited December 27, 2021 by HawkMan
Josef K
Newcastle were unlucky not to pick up the three pts last night. WBA fan’s are not happy with their loss against the virtually doomed Derby.

In all seriousness, the parachute payment model shouldn't be so attractive that clubs actively go into a Premier League season willing to accept relegation - and indeed doing so mulitple times. That business model shouldn't be one that is supported.

Gerrumonside ref
I think Norwich have established a long standing culture for playing good football and promoting youth where possible on top of trying to live within their means. I think this dogma is great in principle but prevents them from being slightly more pragmatic like perhaps Burnley have been down the years in terms of playing style. Put simply, if you try and out-football the good teams all of the time with worse players then you will take a few beatings in the Premier League that can destroy confidence in the game plan. PS Occasionally a well coached team will emerge and defy gravity in the Premier League temporarily but it really is a tough gig for an inferior footballing side. Billy Gilmour from Chelsea does seem to be getting in for a lot of criticism at the moment. They've sold one of their best players to a direct rival and spent a grand total of £50million (and only £15 million net at that). They've also not spent more than £10million on a single player that they have brought in, and two of their other top non loan players Pukki and Cantwell, are out of contract at the end of the season. Quite simply, to stay up, that isn't good enough. I suspect however that they know that.

They refuse to compete and budget to finish 20th, not even 17th. This year they've spent £50 million, bringing in nobody of significant quality or value, whilst selling a player for c. £35 million and allowing two of their stars to be out of contract this season. You can absolutely spend more than that in the Premier League - they choose to not spend because they plan to go down. That isn't sustainable, fans won't put up with it long term. Unlike even 5/6 years ago where they at least attempted to stay up. Fans start to get unhappy quickly - especially those who constantly see their side ridiculed by the rest of the footballing world. When Norwich won 5-1 at Portman Road a couple of years ago, pretty much every road sign at the Norfolk border had a reference to it. The whole county supports the team. They love the fact that people like Delia & Stephen Fry own the club rather than dubious oligarchs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Anglian_derby Edited December 30, 2021 by JonM
