Ed Miliband

Recommended Posts

By their friends shall ye know them. Saintlass liking this post says far more eloquently than I could how wrong it really is.

What?

I liked his post because he was spot on in saying that Labour abandoned its principles years ago.  The only way Labour could have been voted in by a landslide in 1997 was for it to move away from its socialist principles.

I don't use the 'like' button to like the poster but agree with what the poster says.  That's been my understanding of the 'like' button function.  I didn't know the poster had any powers over who liked their posts or indeed that the person who liked a post had to be in harmony with the poster in everything in order to like a post!

I don't remotely share saintslass' political views.

The Labour Party abandoned its principles decades ago

You know this to be a fact of course? Or is it another case of Chris says it therefore it must be right?

I wouldn't quarrel with that. However, as the right wing press were keen to point out, "Red Ed" has abandoned New Labour. My quarrel with Milliband is that he has not been bold enough in attacking Ukip. They are pushing the supine, spineless Cameron further and further to the right and it is up to someone to say "hey lads hey!" That someone should be Ed, he's got the guts, after all he took on Murdoch, but IMO he should be advised by Labour's elder statesmen that it's the right (and politically profitable) thing to do. Unless someone takes a stand against extremism we'll all find ourselves up a certain creek without a paddle.

Regular readers can surmise Saintslass's political standpoint very easily. She doesn't hide her views. I can say for a fact that I don't have the same views politically as her without a doubt, so could Frank I would imagine.

You and Frank should move on. It's gone way beyond boring.

What extremism are you talking about?

I don't think Ed Milliband lacks guts and nor do I think Cameron is spineless.  Ed can't communicate and Cameron has been compromised by having to deal at every turn with the Lib Dems.

There has never been such a case: what a silly think for you to say.

it is my view and I expressed it.

The extremism is obvious to anyone with eyes. UKIP are extremists.  They make incendiary statements, and then withdraw them if there looks to be trouble ahead.  As for Cameron, he is certainly spineless where the right wing of his party and UKIP are concerned.  If he wins in May he is almost bound to take this country out of the EU which will be disastrous for most people in this country.

I would if he would, but he won't!  I only ever respond. You must have noticed.

UKIP aren't extremists.  ISIS are extremists.  UKIP are just a one trick pony which at present is neighing in the direction of some frustrated voters who do not think their voices are being heard.

We survived without the EU in its present form previously; we would do so again if we decided to opt out of it.  Switzerland are doing just fine and they aren't in the EU, for example.  I'm not sure where I stand on that particular topic but UKIP aren't only targeting the Tories.  Labour were very fortunate in a bi election recently where they just pipped UKIP to the post by 600 votes.  If Labour sympathisers think that UKIP is right wing then they are deluded.  They speak to a lot of people who are frustrated over certain issues and those issues will be a challenge to both mainstream parties come election day.

Come on, of course they're extremists.  They want to send EU immigrants back, then when it causes a fuss they don't, they want the NHS to be insurance based, and when people object they don't. There are numerous other examples.  They are the man in the pub with right wing opinions (Farage?) writ large.  Surely we should learn from history.  They peddle myths, and the myths become "truths" unless they are challenged.  You spoke about the "sick man of Europe" on another thread. It was while we were surviving without Europe that we became the sick man of Europe.

Farage and his backers want us out so that they can resume exploiting people without the intervention of European employment protection laws.  It's the ordinary man in the street that will suffer if we come out of the EU.

of course they  aren't extremists. You don't have to be extremist to hold repulsive views. However their effect on the political landscape could lead to extremism as each party tries to outdo the other. This worries me greatly. UKIP have opened the door to making a certain mindset acceptable and respectable.

Still much in Ed's favour.

Labour 5pts ahead today with two different pollsters, Populus and Ashcroft, and are still significantly ahead in the all-important Labour v Conservative marginals.

For a party which has been wiped out in Scotland and which has the most unpopular leader since records began, this is pretty remarkable.

The polls are still being weighted against Labour. This is where they knock 3-4% off the Labour tally and add 1-2% onto the Tories, based on anticipated voter behaviour. On election day, the Tories will have to win by about 5% in order to get more seats.

Most tellingly, during Labour's recent troubles and subsequent slump in the polls, the Tories didn't seem to be picking up any votes. Labour have lost votes to three other parties, but the Tory share of the vote is still very poor.

Call me mad if you want but I still think he'll win!

But their supporters keep blowing the gaffe.  Send Lenny Henry home etc.  I don't know whether Farage is an extremist, but some of his supporters certainly are.  Hitler came to power on a very reasonable programme of righting the wrongs of the Versailles treaty.  Once he was in he abolished parliament and declared himself supreme leader.  It's no good saying it couldn't happen here, it could happen anywhere given the right circumstances.  UKIP are extreme and they encourage extremism. And Millband instead of cravenly relying on them to damage the Tories should say so. IMO it's way too late for Cameron to do anything except resign in favour of someone with a bit of backbone.

I think they will 'win' too, but that's despite Ed rather than because of him.  (By win I mean most seats, I still think a hung parliament is likely)

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

White van man will take a lot of the sting out of Plebgate.

One sentence to sum up British Politics....

I think the immigration figures reflect EU immigration don't they over which Cameron has no influence whatsoever since Blair agreed to the free movement of people.

Cameron's popularity has remained pretty consistent throughout his term in office.  Given that the government is actually a coalition I doubt many people really know who is responsible for what.

Does "many people" include Cameron?
