Toronto (Merged threads)

Recommended Posts

I noticed the topic on Beaumont and the Rowley affair has been locked, so as I have seen all the press reports and as it does keep coming up repeatedly in the press and on here, I thought i'd ask a few questions to fill in my gaps if that OK.

In the Leigh press it said Rowley had introduced Toronto to Beaumont with a view to buying Leigh, which I must admit I missed if its old news - that's in Beaumonts column

Then there have been rumours and Beaumont himself stating Rowley is the likely Toronto coach and has been tapping up players against the rules for League 1 football

This opens up a million and one questions about the Toronto club, the first is just how much money are they bringing to the table swiftly followed by how much recruitment has been going on and closely followed by whats their vision for the future if it isn't buying promotion to SL as quickly as possible

The whole Toronto thing seems to be getting bigger by the minute - I don't imagine they will simply whisk away a half team of players to Toronto or will they and if so that's serious ambition

I know we seem to have done Toronto to death on here but it does seem to me that there is a lot more going unsaid that we don't know about yet  anyone know anything at all about this now or are we all still just guessing

I do hope this effort works out because it's the stuff dreams are made of and we don't get too much of that in TGG World.

Imagine a Toronto team in SL......... just where would all the nice people who like to quote their M62 mantra go? What would they do? The cost to the NHS in therapy alone would be Immense!

Not allowed to comment on Rowley and Beaumont, really?

They're aiming for a squad of 20 players from Europe and 5 from Canada

Interesting strategy. Will they base themselves over here and just fly to Canada for "home" games, or are they going to get 20 people to relocate to Toronto?

The Canadians were with Leigh at the Leeds CCQF, I understand an offer was made to buy the club. They are very cashed up, they tried to get PR to coach the national team.

It seems he has been tapping players up and will be announced soon as the coach if local drums are correct

This is fantastic news for the sport, Canada that is, and these blokes seem to be the real deal- good luck to them

it's 250k at the moment but from what I understand that also includes putting people up in houses, players relocation costs etc. I can't see how they could get 20 non Canadian lads in on that but the fact is they're in - the RFL and Toronto have both obviously talked everything through so can only assume there will be a change for 2017. We could pick through it all endlessly but as most or all of us are not privvy to what's been agreed I guess we'll have to wait and see. Not sure what Toulouse will make of having to cut their budget if rules are changed following year but they seem happy enough with life and would have been consulted about Toronto along with the other clubs.

Whatever the facts are....it's damn exciting!

Also it seems under 21's are exempt from the cap - although you may actually need a side for U21's to play in for that to count.

Here's the link to the 2016 regulations (L1 salary cap is in the appendices):

Looking forward to bumping into a few people who will probably know and bending their ears ;-)

One last thought - I remember Toronto's initial talk involved laying on a sponsor for the competition. Has that been mentioned again? When does Kingstone Press deal run out?

There will never be a Toronto team in SL so you needn't worry about therapists' costs in the NHS. Edited by westlondonfan

Every player will have a FT development role

Lots of relevant points about the cap - the rule about extra cash from income that Beaumont helped across the line last year applies to League 1 or not - don't know - but they  would blow the cap in resettlememnt payments alone

20 from the UK - wont work if they are here and fly out once every month or week - so I hey will have to relocate for at least 3 months

Why wont they get in SL

Too many financial and logistical difficulties over a long period of time. Also will look a big weird to the wider sporting audience I think. If it happens, which I don't think it will, they will only be in Super League for three years or less. The salary cap would probably become a issue too?

In Canada? Great news if true. I'd have thought they'd be able to find more than 5 Canadian players good enough for league 1 but if this is the plan, it sows the seeds

Salary cap raises its ugly head again. If the Canadians are successful and get to SL with multi-millionaire backers behind them willing to pump huge amounts of cash into our game and help expand globally are we saying that we would say "no thanks" because some teams dont want to or can't spend the maximum now?

Most importantly....will there be a place on the flight over to Canada for Hemel Stags gold membership holders?  ;)

This is RL - of course there will be people that take that view! I think your statement is based on a huge "IF" by the way.

I think this might be the first step to globalising RL, but Toronto, Catalans, Toulouse, a US team on the eastern seaboard with similar transport links (Miami springs to mind - would pull in US and Jamaican players) might not be a pipe dream even if it does seem a little far fetched - or was until now anyway

Who would have thought we would have had a team from Canada in L1 let alone Toulouse coming back for more

If anyone has any more news about Toronto bang it on here or start a new thread, its a very exciting development and I for one would like to keep an eye on it

Brian Noble going to be the rugby director according to Sky

??? How so?

Who do you suggest is available, and who is better qualified than Brian Noble for a fledging League 1 club to employ?

I think it would be an outstanding appointment.

In case we've forgotten Noble's achievements (from Wikipedia):

Noble took the Bradford Bulls to the 2001 Super League Grand Final in which they defeated the Wigan Warriors. As Super League VI champions, the Bulls played against 2001 NRL Premiers, the Newcastle Knights in the 2002 World Club Challenge. Noble oversaw Bradford's victory. In July 2002, Noble received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford for his achievements as a rugby league player and coach. He took the Bulls to the 2002 Super League Grand Final which was lost to St Helens RFC. He was named Super League coach of the year in 2003 and succeeded David Waite as Great Britain coach following the 2003 Ashes series.

Whilst head coach of Bradford Bulls, he guided the Bulls to two Minor Premiership titles, victory in three Grand Finals in 2001, 2003 and 2005, the Rugby League Challenge Cup in 2003 and to three World Club Championships in 2002, 2004 and 2006. In 2004 he received the Rugby League International Federation's coach of the year award.[4]

I thought Brian Carney was a real plonker on Sky last night and actually found myself agreeing with Phil Clarke, which was a bit odd!

Nobby in charge and Rowley as coach, 4 weeks rotation based in or around Manchester then Toronto, all the cash to move players around coming from a previously unused source at that club, a full pre-season and some real Canadian promotion on the other side of the pond, whats not to like

A coach like Rowley would be his own man, and his style of play is very entertaining and was before Beaumont opened his cheque book, using Championship level players - I imagine there will be a number of players at that level that would enjoy an adventure like this and of course putting the right type of player into Toronto with the clubs initial profile would only be an added attraction - 5-6k watching matches out there for internationals with the USA, so I would imagine if they can sustain some success at an early stage they may well do very well indeed

They already have dedicated Tv shows putting on local match highlights as well as SL and NRL coverage and with a broadcaster behind the club it would be great if Carney had to swallow his negativity

Hope they make it work cant wait to see who they sign and the proposed impact they might have on the league 1 season
