Missing a 2nd row and a winger

Recommended Posts

I've been picking an England 13 in my head but I can't think who to play in one of the 2nd row spots and one of the wings.

I've got Whitehead and Makinson but can't decide who plays the other side

Is it me or are we a bit short of quality 2nd rowers at the moment?

2nd row is one area we have strength in depth IMHO

Centre is a problem

I agree that centres are a bit of a problem but that actually makes it easier to pick. There's only really Farnworth and Percival that we could pick there at the moment.

We do have a few 2nd rowers but no obvious stand out players to partner Whitehead

Makinson and Marshall or Davies. I can’t separate those two. There shouldn’t be anybody else in the discussion if they’re fit.

Second row, Farrell.

What about Johnstone, Young or Handley?

Johnstone is on his third injury spell already this season. Yes fantastic winger if he plays, but if in squad you would need cover for him as its highly likely he may not be fit when required

Leeming this seasons stand out hooker for me.

Widdop and Williams ,on recent displays not a chance

Chris McQueen and Mike McMeekin must be in the mix for the right-sided second-rower. It's Bateman's position to lose though. He'll hardly be dropped.

Ryan Hall is in the mix for the left wing and is a higher level player than a solid SL-level winger in Tom Davies.

Centres pick themselves in Percival and Herbie.

Where’s your full list of position by position options?

If Welsby doesn’t play Full back he may well find himself at Left Centre

Chris McQueen is Australian first and English second, he’ll have to get past that before Wane will pick him

Fullback: its just going to be Tomkins lets face it

Centres is a shootout between Farnworth, Percival, Welsby and Watkins as an outside shout. Welsby has to make the 17 and can play anywhere. Watkins is a proven test-class centre and has been outstanding since his return (albeit at second row). Wardle & Newman just haven't been fit enough to earn the spot

Wingers: Makinson a certainty then between Davies, Young and Handley. Johnstone just can't put a run together.

Halves: Has to be Hastings & Lomax for me. Williams & Widdop just aren't performing, huge shame Dodd isnt available.

Props: Walmsley, Tom Burgess certainties. Thompson highly likely despite form. Then a shootout between Oledzki, Lees, Sutton. I'm a big fan of Havard & Byrne but it'll be too soon for them.

Hooker: Leeming for me. Clark & McShane not been good enough this season.

Second row: Whitehead a certainty. Whilst not at his NRL best, Bateman has been much improved this season and starts on class & raw ability. Farrell & McMeeken deserve to be in the mix. Injury probably killed KPP's chance.

Loose: Knowles certainty. Smithies or Radley as the backup.

I don’t much disagree with your selections or logic

Mikey Lewis has been the stand out England qualified half for me while in the absence of Lewis Dodd I’d select Will Price for the element of danger he brings and his ability to bust the line.

I don’t get the Smithies selection, he’s just not shown the levels required and I’d question his temperament for matches against Australia, NZ & Tonga

Tomkins is our full back and captin so we have Welsby who can play a number of positions- great to have someone like him on the bench though.

So come Mr Frisky, where’s your list of the players in contention for each position, it’s easy to post a stupid emoticon but where’s your ideas on who’s a potential player for England

Yep there it is the 3rd best English side for English players to be picked for the world cup. oh and challenge cup finalists not a single player. Wow so blinkered

Whiçh Huddersfield players do think should be in there?

Pryce, McGillvary, Wardle are the ones that I think would be in with a shout
