There’s Nothing Like League

You know what, having watched the clip, I actually don't mind them just calling it League.

When you've got visuals, it being rugby is a given - you can literally see rugby being played.

So using 'This is League' as a snappy way of identifying ourselves actually worked for me, to my surprise.

But how much better would it have been if they had said "This is Rugby League"?

'League' is just a group of things with a common goal be it sports teams, emperors or what ever.

But then it would've had to be 15 seconds .... be your age!

Very unimaginative and cheap looking.

It's also very noticeable that they don't use the word Rugby. League is such a poor term to try and sell a sport.

So much for the brave new IMG world.

Yet when the NRL call it Footie or League everyone says how great the Aussies are.

Actually, the Aussies get an awful lot of stick for calling the game League and abandoning the word Rugby. An awful lot of stick.

As I said, in conjunction with the rugby visuals, that's basically what they are saying, but in a shorter, snappier way. I think it worked nicely in this case.

But on further consideration I agree that on its own, just calling the sport 'league' doesn't work.

The situation in Australia is honestly absurd. Outside of Queensland, NSW, and Canberra, most people refer to Rugby League as just Rugby, and if they know about Union they'll just call it Rugby union or just Union.

So the people who don't watch the sport call it Rugby but those who do watch it, call it League. It's completely backwards.

As an aside, there is a shockingly large amount of people outside the Rugby states of Australia who don't know that 2 forms of Rugby exist. I've been asked a rather large amount of times at how many Melbourne Storm players play for the Wallabies or All Blacks.

The Kangaroos are hardly known about in the AFL states, Origin is but so many think that's the only form of Rugby it continually suprises me. Things are changing though.

IMG are good at this stuff.  It is one of the main reasons why we have partnered with them.

I put this link in  a thread about gay people in our game but look at the photo in this for a superb image for RL to sell itself.

The photo of the kid watching the game? Sorry, but without knowing the context behind it, the photo says zero about RL. You can't even see that it's a rugby pitch that he's looking at.

That’s actually not true. A lot of people outside the rugby league dominant states refer to the sport as just NRL, as they are used to AFL.

Maybe they forgot to put a reminder in their calendar to to do it.

In all seriousness.  If we have partnered with one of the world's premier sports marketing businesses then let's give them a bit of time to produce.  They will have a plan here.

Come on mate, one glance at the pitch markings tells us what the game is.

I don't know if Oxford has upset you somewhere along the line and you've been waiting for an opportunity to get revenge, but for goodness sake, this isn't it.

I don't mind you having an opinion about the impact such a picture might have but keep it real.

For what it's worth, I think its a great pic (for a lot of reasons) and wouldn't hesitate to incorporate it into our promotional materials.

What a bizarre thing to post. Revenge?? The fact that came in to your head says far more about you than it does about me.

Only to people who are already rugby league fans. You can't even see the posts properly. There's no action on the pitch. The uninitiated wouldn't even know it was rugby, let alone rugby league. Without knowing the context, it's just a photo of a kid looking at a football stadium.

Missing the importance of an image and saying more with something so simple wouldn't be lost on one of those supermarkets for their xmas adverts.

Sometimes I do get the idea RL fans have all got murky coloured spectacles, maybe specsavers were sold out of the rose tinted ones.

Don't worry about posters being upset because most of them would say "It's not a very clean note !" if you offered them a fiver.

Without the context it would be a ridiculously poor image to choose.

I'm not sure comparing rugby league with a supermarket is like for like. I get what you're saying, but you know the context of the photo. Given the lack of any noticeable rugby league imagery on it, I fail to see how that photo could be used effectively by rugby league to sell itself to a new audience.

Great to see the next generation of Rugby League fans continuing the great tradition of counting the empty seats.

Okay the image referred to could be the catalyst for making a brilliant RL video if that photo doesn't provide enough to jumpstart ideas I don't know what will.

And don't be surprised if some far poorer sport seizes on that and makes full use of the idea, symbolism etc etc.

I wasn't comparing RL to anything by the way I was simply saying there's a way things could be marketed.

I think the point of this year being a holding year is right. As frustrating as it is, we do need to allow time for these things to flush through.

Now a video may be different, because that can tell a story that a still image can't do.

There isn't any symbolism in that still photo on its own - try and separate the photo from the context. On its own, the photo would be a poor image for promoting rugby league. If you wanted to make a video story based around the photo's context to promote rugby league, then there will likely be more effective imagery that could be used to get the message across.

FYI if you haven't seen them, try the When Push Comes to Shove books for some brilliant (albeit now very dated) rugby league imagery and stories.
