The Grand Final - who will win?

Recommended Posts

I see the game very much following the pattern of the last league fixture (which ended 10-6 to Saints) - a tense, low-scoring match where the Valkyrie forwards and a mean defence keep them in touch despite Saints being (deserved) favourites.

Channy Crowl and Vicky Whitfield will have a big part to play in ensuring that Saints pack match up to a fired-up York side from the start.

According to the BBC scores and fixtures page, this game is an eliminator. Yet again, couldn't care less attitude of the broadcaster. Compare that with the attention they give to women's football, we are definitely the poor relations.

It's a shame Leeda aren't in it as that's the only time Radio Leeds seem to realise the women's game exists, unless there's some news story they can tie it in to.

On the General Forum thread about the WSL semis, some posters were convinced the BBC are committed to comprehensive and meticulous coverage of women's RL.

Their hands are tied. The contract with Sky forbids the BBC from covering WSL. And the RFL are inept, so why should Radio Leeds make any effort?

Doesn't seem to stop Radio Cumbria, York etc.

There's 'radio' coverage of the final on the BBC sport website and the app.

Good to see Peachy involved in the celebrations after the match , has been with the girls all season supporting them and involved in training as far as her ' bump ' could let her.

After what York have been through this year I think that one will be extra special.

Not going to argue with Hetherington as player of the match but Pakulis was exceptional.

I didn't get to see the match, but very happy with the result. Well done York!

Wow! What a game. I loved every minute of that. Here's a pretty long report if you're interested ... York Valkyrie Defend their Super League Crown! (womensrl.com)

Excellent report. Just one detail wrong: Eboni Partington's try was converted from the touchline by Marshall, not Brennan. The scoreboard had it wrong. Only one of those two was on the field at any one time.

Thanks mate, I’ve changed that. I have terrible eyesight and it was on the far side 😂

And to think Tara Jane Stanley does nearly all the kicking when fit. Who would have imagined that her two "stand-ins" could effectively win it for York by causing such havoc in the Saints' defence.

Commentary of the ruck infringement that resulted in Faye Gaskin kicking a second penalty goal reignited a bete noire of mine. Lead waffler was a bit perplexed. Courtney Hill said it was "one of those 50-50s".

There is nothing perplexing or 50-50 about a defender keeping hands on the ball when the tackled player is back on her feet. It's an obvious clear-cut offence.

The tackle and ruck is fundamental to RL. We would expect commentators and pundits to be conversant with the rudiments. Yet most of them appear clueless and their muddled remarks undermine the game's credibility. Viewers could be forgiven for thinking that rucks calls are arbitrary, similar to RU.

Only just seen the half-time "analysis". Wilkin said this penalty was for a ball-steal.

RL must be the only sport whose players still possess little understanding of the rules after long pro careers.

Im going to go for Saints, Leigh, Fryston, and Workington to win the finals but I believe league 1 and 2 are a week on Sunday rather than this week.

Poor effort.

Hull beat Fryston in the League 1 final in the Evie Sexton show to move up to the Championship.

Im guessing some sort of restructure will happen from here and there is a meeting Tuesday about this and the new u19's competition rules. Cas we have to presume will come down, Wakey want to stay in League 1 and will start paying players next season. Rumor that Amy Hardcastle got rejected for the coaches job, you have to presume her commitments to Wigan on Sundays played a big part. Wakey are expected to take a lot of the best Dewsbury players so if they stay in the Championship it will be a struggle.

With Workington coming up though it would mean League 1 would have to increase in size unless this years league leaders Thatto end up dropping out with them losing so many players to the new U19's rules.

Don't normally approve of singling out try-scorers, but 5 out of 26 points is something else.

All the Hull FC line-up look as though they qualify for under-19s.

What's the current outlook at Wakefield?

You said on another thread that they "have stopped their ladies team from playing at the stadium". Now you say the club will be paying players next year.

Mixed signals.
