Just a quick Hello from a new forum user 👋

As stated in the title I have recently converted to the world of Rugby League and I'm absolutely loving it.

Growing up as a kid in North Manchester rugby was never something me or group of friends ever entertained, I was once roped in to playing a match for my secondary school team as they were short of players and I was quite a stocky lad. I reluctantly agreed and it was very much a baptism of fire I had no idea of the rules so I had to learn on the job as it were and finished the game full of bruises and mud and that is a far as I ever thought I would go with the sport..

Fast forward 20 plus years I have now moved, settled and have had children in Oldham and the local side The Roughyeds have gained alot of interest locally due to thier take over, ground share with Oldham Athletic and successful season in league 1. My son who is at the same age as I was when I decided that Rugby wasn't for me it's doing quite well at school for their Rugby Team and has a keen interest in the sport and we both now regularly attended the Roughyeds home games and can't wait for the new season start. I even managed to convince the Mrs to come with me to England Samoa last weekend at Headlingley and she loved it aswell.

Looking forward to continuing my, my son's and hopefully my mrs and daughters journey in the world of Rugby League 👍🏻

Welcome to the forum and I hope you stick around and make some strong contributions.

It will be interesting to read how your support for Oldham develops as time goes by.

Welcome to the board, I hope you enjoy the chat.

At risk of turning this into a cross code conversation (let's not do that everyone please!), I just wanted to ask, as I am genuinely interested, was it Rugby League you played briefly as a kid and is it Rugby League your son is now playing in school?

Welcome to the board, it’s great to hear there’s yet another convert.  You should know though, that being so positive about the game isn’t allowed.

It shows that a well run club that's going places will attract new supporters. I will be following Oldham with interest next season from afar.

its a shame but due to your conversion been so "recent" you wont be able to join in and  moan about how great the game used to be back int day - how the grounds were better - the game was better with the "biff" - etc etc but good luck with interacting

Welcome to the greatest game and to the Roughyed family.  Delve into our history, it goes hand in hand with Rugby League. Oldham was the very first home of the northern union/rugby league, 1895- 1920. All thanks to Joseph platt, son of Oldham, Father of Rugby League.

That story is from 2021….the Hamilton era.

Good to have you join the rugby league family….although if you travelled just a few miles down the road you could watch God’s team…the mighty Rochdale Hornets. Now that is real rugby league.

Plenty of great Community Rugby League teams in the area if your son’s interest in playing grows. Just a word of caution, some of my coldest moments as a spectator parent have been on the touchlines at St Anne’s and Waterhead!

Enjoy. Despite all the moaning, RL gives far more than it takes!

Welcome.

We play it in Wales too you know.

Hope to catch up with you, for a pint, somewhere down the line.

I did my Level Two Coaching Course in Oldham.

Long live Andy Goodway!
