Keith T Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Sad news that another of our legends Sol Roper passed away suddenly yesterday. Sincere condolences to his family. RIP Sol legend and gentleman. I remember when ............................."It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimension, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave Hadfield - Independent 25th August 1996.
bobg Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 So sad to hear today's news about Sol, truly one of the greats of our club and a true gentleman. Condolences to his family. RIP Sol.

"i hate workington town fans with a passion they are the biggest cry babies in rl and boy do they get jealous easy"- Choccy 2012 "if it wernt for me they would have nowt at all to talk about" - Choccy 2012
Old standoff Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Sad to hear of Sol's passing great bloke and super player paired with Harry Archer real quality pairing even when we were competing with the best of teams, Rip Sol.
Old standoff Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Yep, think. Sammut and forber would have been on the bench if Sol and Harry Archer were about absolute tackling machine Sol.
alba Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Gave Barrow the runaround many times, but brilliant to watch, I wish there were more like him, will be sadly missed.
The Voodooguru Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Very sad news, especially how quickly it all happened. At least he got to enjoy his holiday. Best wishes to his family. One of Town's legends RIP. The race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but thats the way to bet!

bomberisgod Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 a Gentleman in every aspect of the word,R.I.P.
Cato89 Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Heard nothing but good things about him, always knew he was a Town legend too. RIP, Thoughts with his family and friends!
Chrome Dome Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Sol was a brilliant scrum half. The Archer/Roper half-back pairing were outstanding for Town for many years. I always recall when St.Helens arrived at Derwent Park, in the sixties, a certain international scrum half was missing from the Saints line up - so obvious to us at DP that he didn't fancy being outplayed by our dynamic Workington number 7. RIP Sol Roper - a true Town legend.
unicorn106 Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Sometimes the words legend and immortal are banded about a bit to easy when talking about former players, but not in the case of this man. I had the pleasure of watching him play when I first started watching Town as a 7 year old, he was awe inspiring then when he was in the latter years of his career, he must have been unbelievable in his younger days. Condolences to all the family, they just don't make them like that any more. RIP Sol, Town legend and immortal.
