John Wayne fans wanted to see John Wayne. Even when he was playing Ghengis Khan. Not to my taste, but then neither is the glaringly obvious "give me awards!" type of Method Acting* at the other end of the spectrum.

*I think it was Humphdrey Bogart who referred to it as "scratch your ass and belch" acting.

But surely "The Longest Day" is an historical document, of what actually happened on both sides.  The producers go to the trouble of getting actors who look and sound like Eisenhower and Montgomery, with German actors speaking actual German and then stick John Wayne in a key role. Presumably it had something to do with financing the film.

“Few thought him even a starter. There were many who thought themselves smarter. But he ended PM, CH and OM. An Earl and a Knight of the Garter.”

Clement Attlee.

As for Sight and Sound magazine  ,  i had to to trawl down to no. 38 to find a film i regularly watch and still enjoy , and that was Some Like It Hot  .  Most of the "top" films voted by the critics are arty films , all about how they were shot , the scenery , how different camera angles enhance certain scenes ,costumes ,colours etc.......but then again its very much like art  , i can`t believe Jackson Pollack got away with that rubbish  he continually dished up, but thats another debate .

Not for me, Vertigo at #2, Hitchcock one of my favourite directors. My favourite Hitchcock is Rear Window but Vertigo is up there.

And 2001 at #6, I've always loved Kubrick. My favourite Kubrick is A Clockwork Orange but 2001 is probably second.

I watched 'The Gathering' last night on Prime. Was recommended to me and to be fair I thought it was quite good. Interesting story. Worth a watch if you're looking for a film to fill an evening sometime.

I think everyone has a film where they have to watch it no matter what if it's on TV. I'm currently watching mine: Kindergarten Cop! 😁

What's yours?

Ice Cold in Alex, but only if I have a bottle of lager in the fridge. If I don't have one, THAT scene is far too frustrating to watch dry.

Other than that, pretty much any Mel Brooks or Marx Brothers movie.

Just treating myself to Paul  before bed. I'm a massive fan of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Utterly pointless trivia: I live about a mile from where Simon and Nick first met; a mediocre Tex-Mex restaurant called Chiquito's next to the Southern end of the M1. It closed many years ago, to nobody's regret.

While I've seen and enjoyed some of Alex Cox's films, it was his time as presenter of Moviedrome that (kick)started my love of offbeat, cult and just plain mad movies.
Well, he has begun a Kickstarter for something he describes as a Western version of Nicolai Gogol's "Dead Souls" which he is saying will be his last movie. I pledged enough to get the soundtrack, screenplay and streaming access to the finished project. Then I added £20, just because.

Is that the Alex Cox that made Repo Man?

Yes, the director of Repo Man, Sid & Nancy and (probably only for diehard fans of The Clash) Straight to Hell.

The Fall (2006) - not a Mark E.Smith biopic, but a visually lush fantasy starring Lee Pace, who may be best known for playing the grumpy elf king Thranduil in The Hobbit.

Busy couple of days film watching, Ken Loaches The Old Oak on Netflix, unfortunately a bit too realistic of the attitudes of a lot in my home town, also 2 oldies on YouTube in a young Ray Winstone in That Summer and Irvine Welsh’s made for tv Wedding Belles

The ever changing film section on the channel 4 player has a great selection at the moment. In the small world of Scottish tv and film the same actors/actressess are constantly recycled and Gary Lewis is one of the best . His starring role in Orphans is available at the minute on there as well as supporting roles in the brutal Glasgow film ‘Neds’ and the blockbuster Gangs of New York

So .. last night I watched the James Blunt documentary. Netflix. Quite eye opening at times.

Well worth a watch IMO.

As someone who as always despised the whole 'Brits' thing it was very enjoyable.

Second this , covers some of his Army service , his deployment to the 90's Balkans war included.

Loads of tour coverage , loads of laffs , especially the tweets , well worth 90 mins of your time.

This trailer for Heavier Trip: Road to Wacken just turned up on YouTube. Could be interesting, in a "Spinal Tap directed by Aki Kaurismakii" sort of way.

I've never seen the original one, Heavy Trip, but I know it's a bit of a cult classic, essentially Finnish Spinal Tap.

I'm going to watch the original as soon as I have time (i.e. once the Olympics are done).

Inside out 1 and 2 are very clever films and worth watching. Animation seemingly aimed at a young audience but scripted for adults
