Yorkshire v The Rest of Britain?

Recommended Posts

I'm probably not the biggest fan of international sport on here, and I've said in the past that there shouldn't be a RLWC, or an Olympics come to that. Have an Ashes Series and a Kangaroos v Kiwis Series, yes. How about a 3 Match Series of Yorkshire v The Rest of Britain?

I don't think you can expect Yorkshire folk to lower themselves to only playing the rest of Britain.

I think it should be Yorkshire vs The Rest of the World, or perhaps even Yorkshire vs The Rest of the known Universe.

Yep that'll really dispel the image of the game as a small regional sport. You can just hear other folk say, " Yorkshire ah right that's where they play the game innit,  playing against some team cobbled together from the rest of the country, ah bless!"

It’s true that as the Rest of the World explores space and pushes the boundaries of science...our inward looking Yorkshire brethren mainly focus on the correct name for a ball shaped piece of bread.

(It’s a flour cake btw)

Let’s settle our differences with a three match series of rugby league!

I’d rather see a county of origin Lancs v Yorks game personally, if it was taken seriously.

This is the moment if there’s ever going to be one to relaunch a roses battle.

It was, of course, tried before in the hope of emulating the State of Origin. A problem is this country - in all sports, not just RL - is that most people appear to be more club-orientated than county or country minded. They might want their representative team to do well but not at the expense of their club team.

It would be pointless. Lancashire is a joke county nowadays. What is it anyway - Bolton and Blackburn or something? The big cities of Liverpool and Manchester don't want anything to do with them. At least Yorkshire is a proper county with some proper big cities.

That's why a Roses match won't work - Lancashire is too small to compete. Yorkshire would crush them. Might as well play Yorkshire vs Norfolk, for all the good that Lancashire are.

Queensland vs NSW is a proper rivalry.

I'm not sure that's true actually, and I don't think it tells the whole story, even where it is true.

If you take cricket, I think that most cricket fans would prioritise England winning something to their own county winning something - and in cricket your county is effectively your club. I know that I'd much rather England win the Ashes/World Cup than Hampshire win the County Championship or whatever. Not even close, to be honest.

In RU, the national teams are far better supported than club teams - most people don't even support a club team.

And in football, whereas I'd agree that most fans would choose their club winning something over England, that doesn't stop England from getting amazing support when it comes to World Cups and Euros. So it's not a case of one of the other - most fans have room for both.

Having said all that - if a Roses concept has been tried and didn't work, and if nobody wants it re-introduced, I guess it's not worth trying again. For whatever reason, people aren't interested.

Yes, each to their own, although for me ... Lancashire to win County Championship more than Engalnd to win the Ashes at cricket ... and Oldham to win anything more than GB beat Australia at RL.

Yes, I'd like Lancashire to beat Yorkshire at RL .. but I'd much prefer to win against someone who would at least give us a challenge. ?

Lancashire v Yorkshire in cricket is great. That and Middlesex v Surrey would be my two favourite games to look out for as a neutral.

But this is RL, so it won't work.

Not worth pushing lancs v Yorkshire again.  Does nothing to help expand interest in the game

saying that some additional rep games would be good

north v south origin would be good. Marketing would be easy, the media would love it

Lms would be a good captain for the south and am sure plenty of players have a southern parent

North vs South would be the ultimate advance for the game if two competitive teams could be thought up.

I just don’t think we’re there yet.

England vs the Rest of the World (exiles based over here plus France/Wales players if necessary) might be the most realistic option if there’s not the logistics for a touring side to help warm us up for next year’s World Cup.

North of England v South of England would be embarrassing and watched by a couple of hundred people in London, if you’re lucky.

It would if you played it tomorrow, but maybe not in the future if you think positively.

Fair's fair though .... we would give the South a chance
