Excellent bit of text commentary on the BBC today. "Jimmy Anderson was left stranded just 91 short of a first career hundred"

That's a steal from the late, great Richie Benaud, who made that quip about Glenn McGrath getting out for 6.

The Hundred - it's worse than you could possibly have imagined. And I imagined its loss making was pretty bad.

I’ve not watched any of it as I have no interest in the teams.

Have they secured investment in the format from India and Australia yet in this new format?

When do we think these losses become critical enough for English cricket to abandon this experiment?

Or is it a battle to the death?

IPL has notably invested in South Africa and the Caribbean but not in England, as far as I know.

The Hundred is included in the TV deal which runs for a good few years yet so that means we have it until at least the end of that deal.

This year will be interesting. I can't see any update to the marketing but they have started to include matches in some county club memberships.

It really was meant to be making money from the start so the idea, retrofitted, that all new things take time may be fair but it's not how it was sold and the losses are very significant, on top of the money already invested into it.

Thanks for that summary.

Anecdotally, I know of one family whose young son has enjoyed The Hundred at Old Trafford but he was already a convert to the sport long before.

The price point has definitely encouraged them to go, so if the price point changed and the broadcasting went fully behind the paywall, I suspect they wouldn’t attend.

In the same way they also are really enjoying following Altrincham FC every other week as a family rather than holding out for the odd Manchester United ticket and paying a whopping amount for the privilege of that.

I suspect they won’t be the only people taking these decisions about how and when to watch their live sport.

With the Ashes looming, here's a happy memory from 2005.

Looks like the end of the Hundred is nigh if some reports are right…

Lots of talk in the papers about The Hundred being replaced, although arguments already seem to be raging about the replacement... that doesn't even exist yet.

Yorkshire CCC and its potential Saudi Arabian new owner.

No it's not April the 1st, and this may have a connection to the proposed Saudi T20 League.

England squad announced. Foakes dropped, to accomodate Bairstow who takes the gloves.

Poor decision imo. Foakes has done well, and Bairstow did extremely well as a specialist batter, and less said about Crawley the better.

I would've much preferred Root open the batting instead of Crawley, which could be a good role for him under Stokes and McCullum, with Bairstow and Brook at 4/5.

Stuart Broad bowling to Alistair Cook in the County Championships today. Almost like the old days, when high class batsmen and bowlers played on a cool day at Trent Bridge in front of 200 people.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

Ollie Robinson got Labuschagne ( or just Marnus if you’re an Aussie tv commentator ) lbw first ball , which was funny

Crawley made his standard low grade score, I see.

Yeh but he can be explosive , and he’s bought into Baz ball and scoring runs consistently isn’t really that important and and err , I can’t really think of anyone who’s had backing like that for not really much reason . I’d have a small wager he won’t make it all the way until The  Oval

I do get the point that it's the system not the individual parts but ... well, it's rubbish when someone is that poor that consistently.

Rob Key is doing his job though. Now he's on the inside, the media who all like him are much more on side. The only real, proper, comments are from the sofa-based media. Those who need access are all simping along.

Upwards of £ 60 a ticket a Lords today for a glorified trial game at which Ireland rest their key player Josh Little and England have a bowl out for the fourth seamer position.

Not a big crowd expected - in 2019 tickets were £35 a pop. and there is a rail strike on days 2 and 3.

England really need to win convincingly within 3 days for this to be meaningful and I am a bit perplexed that Ben Duckett is opening with Zak Crawley. Nothing against Josh Tongue either, but I am of the view that you should earn an England cap rather than be given one because of opposition and circumstances.

England on a hiding to nothing in this game and are going to be undercooked against what on paper, is a superior Australian side whose own warm up game is against India in the World Test Championship.

As the song goes, there may be trouble ahead.

Ireland 172 all out in their first innings.

At least the weather's nice.

Of the same opinion , going into the Ashes without Archer and a few other niggly injuries being suffered most crucially to Ben Stokes , it could all get a little ugly .

Watching today we don’t need anymore injuries to our main bowlers .

Afraid the Ireland game is not telling us anything we do not already know about England batting and reserve bowling.

Crawley Does not look the part as a Test opener I am sad to say as a Kent Member and Broad was head and shoulders above the rest of the seam attack. He may not play in the first Ashes Test but it's a bit of a reach to play Anderson, Robinson and Wood together with Stokes wonky knee.

And if the pitch is that flat Australia's batsmen will be less obliging than the Irish.

The pitch is the usual pudding. The number of times England go behind after a series opener at Lord's is aggravating, but the dusty bones of tradition must be honoured.

At least it's usually the first match of a tour, so England can start fighting back at the better venues afterwards.
