I'm going to put it out there. I think that there is every possibility that the 'next' world cup doesn't take place. I mean that's not to say that there will never be another RLWC but I think an extended break might be what eventually happens. I think that the international game is in such tatters that it might need rebuilding from the bottom up.

I am beginning to think you’re right…

Pre Covid I thought we were on the cusp of something big in International Rugby League - Tonga beating Australia.

Even the Pacific Cup during Origin was building.

Now I'm not quite sure & I fear Australia has taken the big fish in the little pond attitude & we now rate a game between 2 states as the pinnacle. Instead we should've been looking at Samoa v Tonga as the new international origin spectacle. World cups are built from internationals played between the 4 year cycles & I am afraid we just haven't planned well enough - apart from England playing Tonga, as far as I am aware no one else is locked in yet to play this year (just over 4 months away after the GF). It is pathetic.

As we approach the 53rd anniversary of the last time they lost a series you can understand they probably get a bit bored by it all.

Yeah I do. But there's a bigger picture isn't there? If they love the game that much they should be willing to participate and grow the game. They are the best and people want to see the best. Plus they could massage their egos.

Reading this forum the Aussies get blamed for everything wrong with the international game.  Its up to other countries to improve their standards to produce genuine competion ( as we saw in the WC SF against Kiwis). All they have done is continuously excel at the game. All began after losing that game against Peter Foxes Dads Army at Bradford.

They have become the Harlem Globetrotters of Rugby League.

The british (north of England) game has suffered from some awful leadership since adopting full time professionalism in the 1990s.

And how good was that game you mentioned against the Kiwis ? I thought it was a brilliant game and would love to see them play at least 1 Anzac test at the end of this season or even a 3 game test all in NZ but it's not gonna happen.

And still no confirmation on this mysterious 3/4 nations SH comp

Won't be any real updates until NRL finalise CBA with the RLPA. Numerous comments from NRL that they want a designated international calendar at the end of the season for approx 4 weeks. Hopefully they deliver.

Best realistic case IMO is 12 teams in Aus & NZ, with potentially PNG & Fiji hosting one game each.

You'll probably know better than me, but I thought that CBA had been finalised a few weeks ago.

If it hasn't, how have Tonga been able to arrange their tour to the UK? Their players (or at least the majority who play in the NRL) will be members of RLPA just like the Australian, Kiwi, Samoan, etc players won't they?

not the first pacific nation to play a series against tier 1 nation.

PNG have played eight series, 4 v NZ, 2 v France and one each v Aus and GB. 5 of those were home series 2 were in France and 1 in NZ.

This makes sense in the context of Woolf's comments when he said Tonga came to the time to make a decision and had no other options.

As the prospective SH 4N (now 3N) would be underwritten by the NRL they can't put those plans into concrete until the CBA is finalised, as a Tonga-England series exists outside that realm of NRL funding they were then free to go ahead and confirm that series.

Didn't France win a two-game series against them in '78?

While I believe that a World Cup is an important vehicle for showcasing the sport more widely, from a personal perspective I would rather see England against top tier nations in 3 test series rather than playing a number of group games that they will win easily.

I am really looking forward to the 3 test series against Tonga and if we get to schedule a 3 test series against the Kangaroos then I would be delighted - if it were here then it would be great and if it were in Australia then even better (for me) as I would travel to watch a Kangaroo series down under for the first time.
