Match thread: Championship Round 15. Halifax v Featherstone Rovers. Sunday 14th July 2024.

fevnut has now published ‘Halifax Panthers v Fev: 21 man squads’.

We find it quite difficult to see the potential shape of the teams in the form in which the clubs publish the squads, so we choose to use guesswork based on last week’s teams to set them out in the traditional manner running from fullback to loose forward and then subs.

We also include a chart showing the leading scorers for both teams.

Maybe two loan players coming in with only naming a 19 man squad

OUR old mate Fishwick in Robins 21 but didn't make the 17 so wonder if he will make a surprise appearance on Sunday at the Shay

Now now Oxy , not like you to be so derogatory

I do jest but I honestly thought he would be a good signing for you. He did better for us than some of our fans made out but he is clearly having trouble adapting to playing part time rugby for whatever reason.

Eden has probably been responsible for letting in four or five tries. We win the game at Sheffield without him dropping a late kick. And he has tended to leave his wing position to defend near the middle leaving the centre with two or three to mark.Ford left him out last Sunday and we beat Haven 66-0  and Wynne played very well so i wouldn't drop him.Haven played well yesterday against Toulouse only losing 24-34 .I have changed my mind about today's game with Fax.Having gone through which matches we would win and lose 3 times i have selected Fax to beat us.However with Reynolds back and if Turner even 90% fit play in the halves i think we can win.The fact that Fax were well beaten at Sheffield shows they may have not made the progress i expected them to after a slow start.

That team looks strong enough to regain our winning record at The Shay.No problem with Eden at full back.If Turner is not quite right i can see why he is on the bench.Reynolds can do the ball work and maybe Aekins can use his pace and eye for an opening more of a strike player.Prefer Josh in the centre for his defence but can see we are short in the forwards so he is needed there.Has anyone been impressed by Nakabui ?i expected a bit more from him having stepped down from SL.

Got to be happy enough with the two points. 9.5 out of 10 for effort, 6 or 7 out of 10 for performance levels, and about 3 out of 10 for discipline again! But with a scratch team out, the two points were all that

Listened on Rovers TV and it sounded like defence was better again.

Defence was pretty good. Fax only scored when we were down to 12, but discipline is still a problem for us. Get that right, and we can be competitive again. Attack was a bit clunky, but was Ben's first game back and I'm sure will improve.

"Out of the way, son. Where's my medal?" Alex Murphy's immortal words as David Hobbs scores his 2nd try in the '83 Cup Final!

Anyway...

Yeah agree with the above.  There seemed a definite improvement in defence particularly with reducing the amount of offloads.  For me half the battle with the attack is a quick ptb but we don't seem to even try to play it quickly or in some cases look too knackered to get up quickly.

Plenty to be optimistic about given the players to come back........

It's been noticeable in interviews with Ford and also with players in recent weeks that after the shocking defensive performances at home to Swinton and York in particular that the emphasis has been almost entirely on sorting out the defence, and I think that has shown in recent games, we have continued to look clunky with ball in hand but have turned in three pretty good defensive performances in a row (even in Toulouse where we only conceded 3 tries and 2 were when down to 12 men).

I think that's fair enough as something had to be done after those very poor defensive performances. We will shortly be facing our toughest period of the season, after Doncaster at home next week (which of course we can't take for granted by any means) we face teams above us in four of our following five games, and three of them are away from home. On recent form Wakefield, Bradford and Sheffield would all be favourites to beat us but I reckon if we can get wins from three of those six games we will have done pretty well, especially as we will have key players banned or injured throughout that period.

If we're still in with a shout of the top 6 after those next 6 games we have a run-in which whilst not easy would at least give us a chance. In terms of making the play-offs it could come down to the very last game of the season away to York who look to have really found their form now and look sure to be top 6 challengers.

At least one of our teams won 😉, good win that at Halifax.

If we can keep defending better and with Reynolds and Turner in the halves we could manage a play off place.I would love to be proved wrong about us finishing 7th or 8th.
