World Cup 28/29/30 Tenders

Recommended Posts

Some strange comments on here.

1. Kenya does play the game

2. PNG has held world events including pacific games, youth world cups, APAC etc. They can manage RL events. If ticketing pricing is right, you’ll get good crowds.

3. Bundling the WCs together meant it was unviable for any tier 2 nation to tender.

4. Profitability is an odd one. Major events are reliant on gov funding. If the tournament is profitable, did it need gov funding? A better way would be to have a hosting fee payable to IRL that is distributed to nations as a development grant. This was the way previously, but I’m not sure after the bumpy 2017 and 2022 WCs.

Agreed massively on 1.

Their domestic competition had 9 teams last season plus junior and women’s activity including internationals for the latter.

A board with some reputation also, of note they secured a fair chunk of sponsorship money from a national business when France toured there.

I think South Africa does as well.

Given that gender equality is poor in PNG, and that each year more than 1.5 million women and girls there experience gender-based violence, it may not be the best place to host a women’s World Cup.

So it might be a good tool to help start changing behaviours and perceptions? Including showing girls there what can potentially be achieved?

The IRL site claims to be announcing the 2029 wheechair contenders but seems to be having trouble. However the displayed photo shows logos from England, France and USA so it looks like those three.

USA for me with this one. Plenty of time, loads of wheelchair basketball athletes and plenty of facilities. They are probably thinking of Myrtle Beach where the series was held against Wales.

Will we ever hear where the other expressions of interest came from ? Apparently it was 11?

It was 11 over the three tournaments wasn’t it? So I guess we now know 8 of them based on announcements to date. See what comes in the men’s tomorrow although will be surprised if there are any new ones in the final tenders (unless Aus want the men’s again). So 3 could go unknown for now!

I actually think all 3 of the wheelchair final tenders could do a great job at hosting. I think US would be great for the optics on the sport though and wheelchair could be a great expansion tool.  As always, depends what financial guarantees are in place!

What would be fellow posters thoughts IF a oil rich Middle East country offered for big bucks to host a RL World Cup?

They already did, and many thoughts were posted

Take the money if it guarantees healthy profits and reinvestment into the international game.

They expressed an interest in hosting, as did others. Is this different (enough) to what was suggested to warrant a denial that they offered to host?
The only way they would have won the bid is if they offered significant amounts of money, so the posts in response fulfilled the scenario I was referring to.

I do think a wheelchair World Cup in England could do well. We have seen potential for decent crowds and tv coverage.  I remember attending the Copper box at the last World Cup. A great event.

Th e wheelchair RL World Cup 20222 was a great event which gathered momentum the more it was televised - which is a good argument for keeping the three World Cups bundled together.

Of the three countries vying to bid for the Wheelchair World Cup I'd award it to USA. France hosted it in 2017 (and failed to find funding as hosts for 2025), England in 2022. USA have a bonefide team who competed in 2022, have hosted Wales last year and with the potential for TV audiences and advertising, wheelchair rugby league could definitely benefit.

I'd hope if England got the nod it would be as a launchpad to an arena based Wheelchair Superleague.

Leeds arena, Manchester arena and one in London would be enough to hold the whole tournament but others could be added if there was a viable team to launch there, two matches in the same arena from the same group on Friday and Saturday nights leading up to semi finals and finals in the two larger venues.

Of course such dreams would need some organisation, and there has been no announcement of England playing any games this year, another momentum killer, after the world cup there was only one game last year in a decent venue in England, this year could be even less.

Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and USA have now moved onto the next stage of bidding.

In the very unlikely event of Kenya being awarded the world cup it would make sporting headlines around the world.

I'll get my coat.

Well assuming one of these does end up hosting it then it will finally be a new hosting nation, altho PNG and NZ have obviously hosted games/groups in the past. The smaller 10 team comp maybe helps some of these nations bid (could they cope with the scale of a 16 team comp in NZ as an example when in reality the country has a population smaller than London?)

As with the women’s and wheelchair I guess it all comes down to financial guarantees.

I genuinely think that if the NRL and the RFL work in tandem to grow the game in the USA, we could get a successful WC in 2030 there. Adding more games to the current Vegas events in different cities with players/coaches/referees going to community/junior/schools teams to really get the ball rolling.

So in conclusion, I look forward to NZ2030.
