RFL and BBC don't understand Rugby League!

Recommended Posts

Both of them give tonight's score as Saints 18 Salford 16 despite the fact that Mbye won the match for Saints with a drop goal in golden point extra time. So how could Saints have won by 2 points? BBC don't understand our sport but RFL should be ashamed of themselves!!!

That’s a coincidence that they both got it wrong … almost like they take an update from the same place for their results!

Alternatively I guess it could be that they have both sent people to the game who don’t understand our points system and can’t read scoreboards.

The stuff some people get outraged by 😂 it’s just a simple error!

I saw the opposite on a recent BBC Scores page about an NRL game where the winning score was a 2-point field goal. It was possibly because their system doesn't have a category for 2-point field goal.

It'll be the same fella contributing to both sites but exactly how he came up with an error like that is a bit of a mystery.

Yes it does, A field goal executed from further than 40 meters i.e. from your own half of the field carry's two points, introduced in 2021 in the NRL.

I imagine someone’s pressed the wrong button somewhere and the mistake will be corrected soon but why waste an opportunity to be outraged at something inconsequential?

It's not inconsequential.  It's a regular occurrence and if the governing body of the sport regularly post nonsense then it reflects really badly on RFL. They are the organisation we should be able to reply upon for accurate information.

I'm not talking about the RL rules. I'm talking about the BBC's system of entering results. I'm guessing they enter results in a database/spreadsheet type format and their pre-set formats do the rest. Or, more likely, they take a feed from some large-scale sports scores outfit and that interface, from the data source to BBC's formatted display, doesn't have any provision for the category "2-point field goal."

OK, I read it as the NRL doesn't have provision for a 2 point field goal.

It's most likely the Press Association that has got this wrong. OurLeague / BBC Sport will be taking their feed.

@fighting irish and @Griff is your confused emoji at my misinterpretation of the post I answered, or NRL operating a 2 point field goal?

It's you thinking that St Helens and Salford play in the NRL.

I could tell you'd misinterpreted the original but I was surprised at your explanation of the 2 point field goal which said it applied when the kicker was further than 40m. from the opposition goal line i.e. in his own half!!!!

It just tickled me. I'm sure you can see with hindsight that you can be more than 40m from the opposition goal line, without being in your own half. No biggie Harry my old chum, I'm just trying to stay involved, when there seem to be hardly anything of note to comment on.
