I'm not sure of the details other than the claim of substantial costs for Lebanon to fly a squad from Australia, but if that is the case, why is that money not made available for France to go the other way and play PNG, Fiji etc?

Because I think it came from the Lebanese community in Australia. Not sure if France would have the funds available.

A tournament down under with Lebanon, Fiji, PNG and France would be good

Because then it wouldn't be a jolly for Lebanon.

It's a good point. Makes sense.

So if this is private money I'm not sure why this is an issue for people.

Sure, the heritage point can be discussed, but if it's specific money for a specific thing, crack on.

Can you point me to the squad limit rule for the qualifying tournament?

Squad limits for the qualifying tournament is what I was musing on / asking about further back in this chat. I would like to know the answer to that.

What I am referring to in the quoted text above is for major tournaments, i.e. Rugby League World Cups, which have squad limits.

I'm not convinced that they need to name a squad for the qualifiers.

21 man squad including a domestic quota, which obviously all 4 involved nations won’t find too tricky.

Yes - for each game. Same as the domestic game. But not the same 21 necessarily for the entire programme.

Nope for the 4 game qualifying games across the week, each nation is only allowed access to players from a named 21-man list. Ukraine have submitted theirs already.

European Rugby League have been working away over the past few weeks marking domestic quotas on each teams long list of eligible players to support an abiding of tournament rules.

🙄

Pick up a few injuries and some coaches will be in difficulty. I'm glad we're focusing on player welfare these days.

There’s only two games to be played by each team, it’s highly unlikely to lose 4 players to injury in one game. Even if that were to happen, 17 fit players remain.

Why don’t the junior kiwis and kangaroos or schoolboys tour France?

I remember a couple of occasions when Australia schoolboys took on Wales U19s also - Israel Folau featured in one game.

What year was this?

They used to, but it seems that now the Australian schoolboys just play a few interstate rep games against each other and then name a rep team that doesn't actually play anyone. Bit like the Kangaroos,

I was going to say yes, when was the Last Aussie u19s/Schoolboy tour of England nevermind France!

It's such a shame that the country with the most resources in RL is just not very outward looking.

France 19s are playing the schoolboys over there, France are keen to tour every year now they can get the players to find their own sponsors to pay for their own  trip.

Which is not perfect but better than not touring at all,

How so?

"Lebanon" (20 Aussies) will spend well over six figures to play these two matches. You could probably employ a dozen development officers in Beirut for 2 years with the amount they are blowing on these two meaningless fixtures.

Here we go again...

That 2024 team in the wikipedia article is just the official selection of the best players from the comp that sees NSW Catholic schools, NSW HIgh Schools, NSW Independent Schools, ACT Schools, Queensland Schools play each other.  They've gone from sending touring teams to Europe every couple of years for several decades and regular fixtures against NZ, to barely having played a game in the last six years.

It's incredibly disappointing, just like when they picked a "Kangaroos Squad" for a season where they didn't play a match.

Do individual Aussie schools tour at all?

There's a company (Wanderers Australia) which arranges sports tours (across a range of sports) which has brought groups of kids to play RL in the UK against amateur clubs. Obviously scratch teams of kids whose parents can pay, but certainly the girls team that came last year was very well received (they ended up playing a game in the snow in Widnes).
