And at one time you used to be able to write a sentence that wasn't gobbledygook!

You say the nicest things.

But honestly, there is so much "shiny object syndrome" going on with that commentary. If you'd ever paid particular attention to club-level sponsorship before you could have had a serious discussion long ago about how successful some people at several clubs are.

This 100% summed up the state of the game for me in the last 20 years.  Toronto being kicked out of the top league for….wait for it guys…..Leigh.  Toronto.  Leigh.  Almost amazing but sadly not really.

No, Toronto were kicked out for not paying bills, but I can’t say I’m surprised you’d take that stance having seen your posts on the Salford thread.

The point is that the money changing hands is never officially revealed with sponsorship deals these days so the best way to judge them is by the leverage that clubs seem able to get from the deals, which in the short term is social media engagement after the announcement has been made.

On that basis Leigh's new sponsorship has been very successful, regardless of how much money is passing.

That's because Derek brings a lot of energy to the table, which unfortunately is often lacking elsewhere, particularly at the centre, which is why I made my comment about cloning him to run RL Commercial's sponsorship department, although some people don't seem to have noticed that that was a tongue-in-cheek comment.

In the longer term we'll see whether Leigh can continue on an upward curve and to what extent this sponsorship deal contributes to the growth in crowd figures for the club, which faces a challenging year in 2025 after losing some key personnel.

That just isn't what happened.

If we're talking about embarrassing, your comment wins first prize!

I think this confirms you don't really understand embarrassment, as suspected from your article.

This isn't particularly aimed at you but since you've it up:

If people want less discussions about X, Y or Z, they should stop participating in discussions about X, Y or Z - it really is that simple. It was the case with TWP, and now with Leigh - the Venn diagram of people complaining and those constantly perpetuating the threads until they descend into childish bickering is a singular circle. It takes 2 to tango so blaming Leigh fans is no less ridiculous than blaming TWP fans at the time.

Only a few months ago on this forum there was a thread titled 'Derek Beaumont' that had literally no text in the OP barring the title yet comments spilling into a second page without a single Leigh fan in sight, before the mods eventually closed it off.

I agree Rob, and if we're honest here, the criticism is in reality based around a couple of Leigh fans who make it all about their club, and struggles to have any kind of really sensible discussion around them.

They've pretty much become characters on here, we see it happen a lot, I remember we had Wendall on here banging about glamour club making Wire threads impossible, and Gledhill making it hard to discuss Bulls for example. I think we are seeing that to an extent.

It's all part of being on a forum, and different teams suffer more at times in my experience. I enjoy the Leigh content personally, I can ignore the stuff I dont like, there's a few very good posters from your team imo.

If social media buzz really is the best way you think you can judge club's sponsorship deals then that is... interesting...

I'm pretty sure last year you were at a press conference at Headingley which got a bit of media traction but wasn't announcing a particularly shiny object sponsor. But that deal was worth well more than 50 times the rumoured value of the Leigh deal, good as that may be in its own right.

The cash value isn't everything by any means but totally ignoring it or discounting it is fundamentally wrong. It's frankly Stobart-style thinking.

Maybe Jet2 will livery one of their aircraft in Leigh Leopard colours?

A bit of plane spotting.

It's a question of timing.

It's the off-season. Generally there's not much going on in RL land in December. What of any importance is going on, is going on quietly, behind closed doors.

There's no point in setting fireworks off so far in advance of the season starts. Keep the pot simmering by all means, but it's too early for turning up the gas.

If someone sticks their head above the parapet, stands up beating their chest and shouting and screaming, it's inviting pot-shots. Beaumont loves it. Its the silly season but 6 weeks too early.

(Of course, you can excuse any comments good or bad by saying "I was joking/taking the mick/etc.")

You can't mix this many metaphors in quick succession.

I was born to run a club like this. Number 1, I do not spook easily, and those who think I do, are wasting their time, with their surprise attacks.

Or, the close season when season tickets are on sale is the perfect time for any good publicity?

This is a special and sacred time of the year. For the sake of the sanity and well being of all mankind, they should have waited till January.

It's good timing for Jet2, I would have thought as well. People sitting down over Christmas and New Year and thinking about their summer holiday with their name in mind.

I always like to see companies that I like get involved in our game (and I know they have sponsored RL before), but as a family package holiday provider, I think Jet2 are pretty much excellent, in a field that can be very very mixed.

The best way to judge a sponsorship deal would obviously to have all the details of the deal in front of us, including the money changing hands and the other elements of the agreement so that we could reach a considered conclusion.

But since we don't have that information we can only judge on the apparent effect of the deal, which, in the week or so after it has been announced, is likely to be the impact the deal has made on social media and the extent to which the deal has enthused the club's supporters, which in this case appears to be considerable.

You could say the same about a club signing a new player, before he has played a game for his new club. Does it get the fans talking?

So I'm not ignoring the cash value, just admitting that I don't know it and neither, it seems, does anyone who wasn't a party to the agreement.

And it would be very surprising if Leeds didn't generate sponsorship deals at a higher value than any other club in the game, given its potential market.

Maybe there should be a RL Commercial Needs a Rob Oates article? 😉

Yes I’ve always had good experiences with them, too.

Prior to the sponsorship, we had already booked with Jet2 for flying to Girona for the Catalans game (from Leeds, ironically enough) so I’m hoping to be upgraded to pilot for the day.
