Great news. Hopefully in places such as South Africa, Italy, Morocco, UAE and other places where the game has been held back for pathetic and selfish reasons we can now move forward, grow and start to achieve some of our potential.

Seemed like a long road, but a nice way for David Collier to bow out.

Big development, really important for growth...the  drive with will be the 9's!, especially womens; huge potential here!

Get the Commonwealth Games thing going bigtime, this is a very, very important development.  I don't know if people in the heartlands understand the full ramifications if we develop this to the max., the end game potential for all of League is great....especially for the non heartland areas.

Someday the Olympics?

Now the agonising wait begins, waiting until we get proper full membership.  Similar to what we've gone through over the last decade I imagine.

That is the spirit. You must be a blast at parties.

and you've likely been living under a rock for the last decade.

Turning a great positive and an opportunity is clearly the mentality of an entity that has been residing under a rock.

So what does this mean to places like South Africa? Does observer status help?

It will be interesting to see the fallout in places like Italy where they have two governing bodies.

Membership  of the RLIF will help.

He might be right!!

I Think we should already prepared the next petition to get the full membership!

do we know what criteria we have to fullfil?

The criteria is well documented, most of the criteria is quantifiable. Most likely RLIF needs to take a stronger role.

From the GAISF press release.." This status is valid for two years."

So we've got 2 years to get our shiz together and and sort out any "rivalry issues".

Finally getting observer status is fantastic, long overdue. Don’t screw it up now RLIF in next two years!

A couple more excerpts from the press release ... still time for RU & WRL to have an impact - TIME FOR FOCUS RLIF!

RLIF and FIP become the eighth and ninth Observer of GAISF and, like the others, will now embark on a rigorous process of assessment and verification which – for those which satisfy all criteria – may lead to Full Membership. This requires resolving any perceived rivalry issues with existing members before going through a vote at a future GAISF General Assembly.

Observer Status allows IFs to be part of the GAISF network, take part in activities including the annual IF Forum and to attend General Assembly, although they have no vote. This status is valid for two years.

Membership Commission chairman Mr. Antonio Espinos said:

Both RLIF and FIP are to be congratulated on achieving Observer Status and their inclusion is a further example of the diversity of the world sporting family which GAISF represents.

We wish them every success and encourage them to now work directly with our existing members to resolve any open issues and learn from all of them, so that in due course they may comply with all requirements for being recommended for full membership.

This is a very significant win - hats off to David Collier who could have been forgiven for handing this over to his successor.

Essentially, we are joining a gentleman's club. Regardless of the strength of our case, we had to persuade and cajole people with no stake either way to stand opposite a very established member, World Rugby. The board's vote last week is the result of top class diplomacy.

This whole episode of course has reminded us how much we are hated by the union leaders.

Maybe the 'rivalry issues' hinted at are about Ikram Butts dodgy combo, rather than RU.

Either way its up to us now. No excuses for not being able to gain full member status in time.
