Salford City Council give go ahead for new ground

Plans to build Salford City Reds' new stadium at Barton have been given the go-ahead by Salford City Council.

The Reds aim to move into the 20,000-seater stadium by 2012 and are hopeful that it will mean they do not lose their Super League licence.

Chairman John Wilkinson told BBC Radio Manchester: "It will put us on the same playing field as the clubs around us."

The proposals now go to the Department for Communities and Local Government for final approval.

Could someone please clarify for me whether this stadium will be a 20,000 seater (as this article states), or a 15,000 seater or a 12,000 seater (as other articles have stated)?

its also pretty important that Salford really do start to take junior development seriously and not just pay lip service to this important part of the game, and not just keep signing has been and never was players from the NRL, and Super League rejects.

if Sale want to share the Salford ground they must realise that they will be junior partners to Salford, and it will cost them. also if the rumour is true that Manchester Utd are going to play there as well that will make sale 3rd in the pecking order at the ground. i'm not even sure Manchester Utd will want a union club playing there as union does destroy the playing surface, risking injuries to there players.

Does anybody know for sure what will happen to the willows after Salford vacate for Barton? there are strong rumours that Swinton Lions are moving to the willows next year!

Could Westminster still intervene in this with all the spending cuts or is this decision final, when is the build due to start. Saw a good digital view of the stadium on boots n all, not keen on the green seats tho (whether they will be green once built, would of thought they be red)

The Barton stadium is not initially going to be 20,000 seats, it's going to have 3 phases of construction, 12000 seater with training and playing facilities, phase 2 will increase capacity to 15000, and phase 3 will increase it to 20000 if needed. So it looks like 12000 will be enough then.
