What are people on here’s opinion about James O Brien (LBC)? I do listen to him and my politics are broadly aligned with his, but I can’t help thinking he has had it very easy with material and discussion points with Brexit, and the car crash of various tory PMs. Take this away and what has he got.

I can’t help thinking that he is just a Waitrose Alan Beswick.

Big fan. I don't disagree with your point and he will need to adjust if he no longer has the Tories in Government to have a go at. But his show covers lots of things that aren't the Tories and Brexit; those are just the parts that get clipped up for social media. For example, Mystery Hour is a joy and completely non-political.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

A few things from Radio 4 around now.

Room 101: Paul Merton's back with a new series, as of last night: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/m001m5p6

John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme: A one-off for the Bank Holiday: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001mblf

And, somewhat un-fanfared and very good...

Sound Townshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001lqmj/episodes/player

Great music is born from a collision of societal and political change. This series explores the origin stories of some of the UK's most vital musical movements. The UK's turbulent societal and political changes sparked the most electrifying moments in modern music history. These aren't the stories you know. They're the moments that came before. Each episode is a world in and of itself, and it'll get as close to the music as possible.

I listened to Ken Bruce's last show and I felt a bit sad because he has been in that slot for as long as I can remember and is a fine broadcaster. But these things come to an end.

People always forget that radio 2 keeps moving to be one step behind radio 1. I expect it will start playing a lot of 90s ( edited to add maybe even the 00s) music as it’s staple with a few earlier songs thrown in. When you look at the DJs now in place that’s the way you’d expect it to go.

Radio 4 are currently broadcasting a re-recording of a lost drama by Nigel Kneale, before he found fame as the author of the Quatermass stories. Toby Jones, Reece Shearsmith and Caroline Catz head up the cast.

I get that they have become somewhat cliched in their longevity, but the fact they remain as an ear worm for many is testament to the qualities they possess.

What you have with ELO, Dire Straits, Elton John, Queen etc is that there are some of the worlds greatest composers and performers behind these bands. That often renders music timeless.

In 1940, a KTSA presenter managed to get H.G.Wells and Orson Welles in the same studio for an interview. Enjoy.

Radio 4 Extra on BBC Sounds. In general, pretty good selection of aged programmes but....they seem to be in a loop playing repeat after repeat of the the same programmes. Pretty sure I've listened to the same episode of The Navy Lark  at least three times....as well as hearing it when it was on the radio all those years ago. The same applies to Hercule Poirot, The Infinite Monkey Cage, The Men From The Ministry, and several thrillers. I'm sure the archive contains much more that we've not heard on R4 Extra.

True. Then again, there is enough audience to keep the better-known favourites like The Goon Show, Round the Horne on rotation. But there is also space in the schedule for more variety too. Then again, it's always worth browsing the iPlayer archives for things they aren't currently broadcasting, but which can be streamed.

I know of one comedy show that I asked them about and which they told be they would not be repeating. There's a recurring theme that is a bit tasteless regarding Princes William and Harry by anybody's standards, even all but the most rabid and one-eyed of republicans.

Back when it was BBC7, I checked every hour of every day of the schedules and recorded loads, so there's less that's new to me these days on R4E.

The archive has a few more things but what isn't happening is any new creation. The age of the programmes on Extra is only going to get older, and they will be more and more familiar, because there is nothing to replace them.
