Boxing day fixtures

Let's not mince words.  These are shameless fundraisers.

Though why the public turn up to these games is beyond me.   They wouldn't give them the time of day at any other time of the year.

They are fundraisers, yes, shameless is just your opinion.

I go every year, not sure what's beyond you? it will have been a couple of months since I saw some live RL, Some new players might be playing for my team and some youngsters always get a go. I go to post Pre Season Friendlies so your idea that fans wouldn't give a damn is off.

RL Fans are weird sometimes, I mean you are basically questioning why some fans enjoy going to watch live RL.

Sure.  Up to you.

What is a Post Pre Season Friendly exactly?

Yeah most clubs went down the money grabbing route initially and kept kept them going with the switch. Most also stopped them rather quickly because they aren't a good idea.

I think those that stopped them did so because they weren't particularly lucrative for them. At other clubs they are and hence they remain.

Blow the cobwebs off then into the bar/pub afterwards, players and supporters. What's not to like? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Never been a fan of boxing day games since the game moved to summer. They are nothing but a money making exercise and just strike me as small time. Our elite clubs should be above that and should be focusing on the conditioning and performance of their players and being ready for the new season.

Clubs trying to make money?

Its outrageous.

What on earth has the sport become!

I can't say going out on Boxing Day has ever held any interest for me, but those that do clearly enjoy it and if the players are suitably rewarded then all is well.

Headingley crowds are much bigger than you would get at any other time of year for what is basically a reserve game, and Oxen get to release another naff shirt, lots of fun and lots to moan about, everybody wins.

Love the Boxing Day Heavy Woollen Derby – the true meaning of Christmas.

Getting up with a hangover, drinking keg Tetleys at 11am and the smell of cheap after shave in the air. Trying to work out who all out new signings are while they're caked head to toe in mud. Magic.

For Dewsbury and Batley it's usually the biggest money-spinner of the season - crowds of 2,000 or 3,000 (announced as half that, natch) which are much bigger than we get for the actual league fixtures. Just a pity we usually lose them..

Great post and justification for the game.  Sounds great!

Perhaps because they want to watch a RL match? Nobody's forcing them to attend.  🤔

We host quite a few relatives over Christmas so the Boxing Day game is a rare opportunity for us all to attend a game together.  It's the only RL game some of them attend.

Long may it continue.

It's always been a tradition for Batley to play Dewsbury at Christmas. Some people seem to dislike tradition RL.

IFIRC in days gone by Batley used to play Dewsbury at home Xmas day and away Boxing day.Can anyone confirm this?

Rugbyleaguerecords has results of every game played since 1895. Try there.

Keep up Griff. Boxing day fixtures are now part of ticking boxes for IMG grading. Such as increasing revenue and supporter connection.

Strange then that they’ve happened way before IMG was a thing in RL.

Is increasing revenue and supporter connection a bad thing?

As a 19/20 year old in the late 80s, having my own car (mk  2 Ford Escort UDB 924S) , meant I could get to 2 games on Boxing Day.

Dewsbury v Batley seemed to always be on Boxing Day morning, so 86/87 went Dewsbury v Batley in morning, then drove back to my side of Pennines for Leigh v Barrow.

Following season Batley v Dewsbury, followed by ...... Springfield Borough v Keighley at Springfield Park. I think Springfield Borough ( Blackpool Borough) lasted only 1 year in Wigan then ended up in Altrincham as Trafford Borough, then Chorley Borough.

Anyway reading this thread brought back some terrific memories of Boxing Day Rugby League.

I've done three on a Good Friday.  In theory, I could've done four but time was too tight for the 5.30 kick-off at Batley (pre floodlights).

I did 3 on an Easter Monday.... Oldham v Leigh , Swinton v Salford, with Wigan v Warrington in the evening to finish. Maybe 1991. All at grounds that no longer exist !

I once went to a match at the JJB Stadium (as it was at the time) with an ex-player.   As we passed Tesco, he recounted to his astonished son how he'd once scored a try just by the trolley park.
