Though why the public turn up to these games is beyond me. They wouldn't give them the time of day at any other time of the year. They are fundraisers, yes, shameless is just your opinion. I go every year, not sure what's beyond you? it will have been a couple of months since I saw some live RL, Some new players might be playing for my team and some youngsters always get a go. I go to post Pre Season Friendlies so your idea that fans wouldn't give a damn is off. RL Fans are weird sometimes, I mean you are basically questioning why some fans enjoy going to watch live RL.

Most also stopped them rather quickly because they aren't a good idea. I think those that stopped them did so because they weren't particularly lucrative for them. At other clubs they are and hence they remain.

They are nothing but a money making exercise and just strike me as small time. Our elite clubs should be above that and should be focusing on the conditioning and performance of their players and being ready for the new season. Clubs trying to make money? Its outrageous. What on earth has the sport become!
Hopie
I can't say going out on Boxing Day has ever held any interest for me, but those that do clearly enjoy it and if the players are suitably rewarded then all is well. Headingley crowds are much bigger than you would get at any other time of year for what is basically a reserve game, and Oxen get to release another naff shirt, lots of fun and lots to moan about, everybody wins.

Getting up with a hangover, drinking keg Tetleys at 11am and the smell of cheap after shave in the air. Trying to work out who all out new signings are while they're caked head to toe in mud. Magic. For Dewsbury and Batley it's usually the biggest money-spinner of the season - crowds of 2,000 or 3,000 (announced as half that, natch) which are much bigger than we get for the actual league fixtures. Just a pity we usually lose them.. Great post and justification for the game. Sounds great!

gittinsfan
It's always been a tradition for Batley to play Dewsbury at Christmas. Some people seem to dislike tradition RL. IFIRC in days gone by Batley used to play Dewsbury at home Xmas day and away Boxing day.Can anyone confirm this?
Wollo Wollo Wayoo
We host quite a few relatives over Christmas so the Boxing Day game is a rare opportunity for us all to attend a game together. It's the only RL game some of them attend. Long may it continue. 7 This world was never meant for one as beautiful as me. Andy JG
As a 19/20 year old in the late 80s, having my own car (mk 2 Ford Escort UDB 924S) , meant I could get to 2 games on Boxing Day. Dewsbury v Batley seemed to always be on Boxing Day morning, so 86/87 went Dewsbury v Batley in morning, then drove back to my side of Pennines for Leigh v Barrow. Following season Batley v Dewsbury, followed by ...... Springfield Borough v Keighley at Springfield Park. I think Springfield Borough ( Blackpool Borough) lasted only 1 year in Wigan then ended up in Altrincham as Trafford Borough, then Chorley Borough. Anyway reading this thread brought back some terrific memories of Boxing Day Rugby League.

I once went to a match at the JJB Stadium (as it was at the time) with an ex-player. As we passed Tesco, he recounted to his astonished son how he'd once scored a try just by the trolley park.
