Some here are sighting RL conquering the Pacific. RL is small time locally in Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa compared to Rugby Union. RL though is much bigger than RU amongst those same people who live in Australia. The Fijian Drua for example play to sold out crowds in Suva and Nadi with healthy local tv audiences. I'm not even sure Samoa has a domestic RL competition? Certainly nobody playing for the national teams is being produced in the islands, they are all heritage players from Australia and New Zealand.

Rugby League could make big inroads on the ground in these Pacific nations with a plan and resources but I imagine the easier path of just using Islanders in Australia will be all that is done. I imagine the dream scenario for the NRL is to be able to run an international comp using only NRL players.

I have put an article on test match comparison between the two Rugby codes in England. It was initially done in 2022 but is now updated. The England RU figures assume that England's last game in 2024 against Japan will be a victory.

It takes wisdom to know when a discussion has run its course.

It takes reasonableness to end that discussion.

It’s £200 to watch England rah rah lose a game, it’s £20 to watch England RL.

No we’re not catching up!

I think we can reach the conclusion that - as strange as it may seem here- a lot of people actually love rugby union.

Ignorance is bliss. A lot of people love sprouts but that doesn't make it right.😀

Next year seems to have some decent plans in place. There’s the Ashes, Pacific Cup and Bowl and the World Series.
Is there anything planned for the nations not involved?

Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the other European nations?

Also are there any plans for the nations that aren’t involved in the WC in 2026?  Would be good if something could be put in place so they aren’t just left without any meaningful games

So what happened in the 90s that pushed Union on to such greater figures

Advent of Rugby Union World Cup & Professionalism - both long after Rugby League did it but Union has done it better

Rugby League needs to grow up, club owners/Directors need to stop being selfish & the international board needs to be given some authority over the domestic competitions. None of which are likely to happen!

Maybe.

But I'll tell you this: lots of RL fans in non RL "heartlands" are RU fans too.

Do they smell of sprouts, though

NRL seem happy to expand international footy if they are the ones in control of it.

They seem to put barriers in the way of any other voices in the international arena, for example delaying the world cup by a year.

There was that one year they ignored the international calender but NZ still wanted to play and played England. This was a positive turning point and the leaders in  Australia game have seemingly identified this as an area to get hold of.

I can't see an independent body ever having full control of the international game and therefore the game will never catch union.

Union have a strong presence on every continent and have a sevens tour which is popular in its own right.

The sevens is also an Olympic sport which opens funding and relevance in a lot of country's.

England dont want to play France every year, or Wales etc.. this would be the only way of progressing international RL in Europe. So what if England win every year

All of the above is lead by Australia to benefit their competition.

There are no plans to develop the game internationally, just to grow the game in and around Australia
