Disappointing performance again I thought and unfortunately a low crowd as well. Thought the middles were very good as usual as was Forster in the second row. We were in complete control for the first 25 mins as they couldn't get out of their own 20 and we were marching down the pitch. After that I thought we were poor and let them back into the match and by the end we were very lucky to hold on.

Lots of improvements to make especially our right edge was very passive and was at fault for all of our tries conceded and nearly all their breaks came from that edge as well.

Sambou is a big problem on defence.

Forwards generally good, but Astley and Dean very poor in passing roles. With the amount of forward dominance and field position we had, they should have been able to create far more.

As for the crowd, seemed a few more to me, but always remember three home games in a week need paying for

Just remember though, this is what we play friendlies to iron these things out.

it looked like Astley pulled a calf muscle or something late on.

Cramp, I think.

It wasnt a friendly…it was the Law Cup. Your game v Wigan A was a friendly😊

We almost snatched it.

Good luck for the championship….but not for the cup…..###### on Mayfield.

Else was very good again.

I thought we dominated for the first 39 minutes, till they scored. We scored 2 tries and went over a further 2 or was it 3 and were pulled back. Their 3 tries were all down our right side. Something I think longy will remedy. But a wins a win, even for a friendly.  Crowd I think was 1,089.

Dean does worry me.

You tend to get one piece of brilliant play per game, but a lot of very inaccurate passing.

As everyone elde thought the forwards played ok and after 29 minutes I could only see us wining by 30plus to nil. Credit to Hornets for getting firstly a toe hold and then matching us. Their attacking play was far slicker. I don’t like criticising players but our halves were very poor. I think Logan Astley at curent level is a replacement full back and Riley Dean though he tackled well as an attacking force showed little craft or guile. The same telegraphed passes which any ten can grab interceptions from or force knock ons time and time again. I don’t think the squad has practised much offence. No cohesion; few planned attacking moves thy I could see. Craven and Drinkwater had a good night; they’re nailed on as first choices, if there were any doubt. Early days, but work to be done. And again , credit to Hornets for very nearly snatching it.

How good was Else again? Head and shoulders above our halves and that's behind a beaten pack.  He's a championship player and should be snapped up at 24yo, contract or no contract.

With the exception of a well worked hornets try and some heroic defence Oldham were dominant in the first half and should’ve scored more. Credit to hornets who came back into it.

i actually thought Riley dean had a good game. Yes they were a bit rusty but you can see how he leads them around the pitch. For me the reason we looked a bit toothless in attack was Johnson at FB who doesn’t offer much coming into the line and played long minutes. If you had PLT, Astley or Dixon there then I think the score looks v different

You could see that longy was trying out different combinations.  Some didn't necessarily work. Also it gives the lads a work out. What makes me chuckle is some comments on social media acting as if the seasons over and that we're doomed. We're not. Must admit though that Else should be playing in a higher division though. He was their outstanding player for me.

Not the greatest of games last night but putting things into perspective it was only Oldham's second game of pre-season, the team that was put out is quite obviously not what the first 13 will look like in the league. As others have rightly pointed out it was a chance to try out new plays / systems / formations etc, some worked well, others not so well. Rochdale played some good stuff on occasions but for me were a bit predictable and did not offer too much. Then again Oldham didn't exactly play champagne rugby either but a win is a win and the Law Cup stays the correct side of the M627 corridor for another year!

Probably again on Sunday a make shift team against Rochdale Mayfield, I don't think we will see the true potential of Oldham until the league starts properly in February. By that time SL will hopefully have his starting 13 worked out and formations / plays etc sorted and then we can see the "real" Oldham and what they have to offer.

Still highly confident for the upcoming season, COME ON OLDHAM!!!!!!

I've said that about ELSE last season that he's definitely one for the future, I'm sure sure someone from championship will go for him, i think behind Craven and drinkwater he could be a really good addition

Talking to a Hornets fan last , who said Oldham had tried to sign Else. He said Rochdale had trebled his money to get him to stay.

Think he is a belter, but does tend to pick up injuries.

regarding scrum halfs, remember sheridan we signed from hornets.

he got badly injured and never played for us again.

i thought he was the best scrum half in champ.1 and the championship.

well i am sure he is back playing for mayfield with his brother.

if i am right he will be playing against us on sunday.

Lot's of mixed messages coming out some good and positive and others a little pessimistic about last night's game. Didn't Rochdale have about 10 players on the bench compared to our 4 - if so that would obviously make a difference and nothing has been said about the ref. He was clueless. Offsides and lying on at the tackle were missed so playing into Rochdale's hands. Good luck to them they played the ref and got away with it.

It might be a good idea for Sean to find out who is going to ref future matches to look for what he/she sees and misses.

Decent crowd for a Wednesday night, we won and Sean saw more of what his squad has to offer. Lot's of positives - the season PROPER can't come soon enough.

And best of luck to our neighbours for the coming season and hope we are both playing in the championship next season.

Thought the ref was poor . The sort that gets players hurt.

There was one particular incident that got the crowd incensed,  one of our players, can't remember who, was tackled with two hornets players on him. By all intents and purposes the tackle was complete, when a third hornet player dived in and delivered a blow. The sound of that blow was heard by all, except the match officials. I couldn't believe it!!!! Hope it's picked up by the review panel.

Cheap shot right in the ribs of Kien Tyrer. The reason they probably got away with it was he was up on all fours, so could have been deemed not complete. I was amazed that he was able to carry on.

Also the occasion in the first half when he penalised Hornets for two consecutive tip tackles and took no further action.

Gives players licence.
