Went to the Lakes Distillery at the weekend situated just outside Keswick and very near a stretch of the River Derwent. Did the tour and tasted samples of their young whisky, vodka and gin.

My favourite. I like the peaty flavour.

It is the base single malt for White Horse and can be tasted coming through. Unfortunately  it is no longer regularly available in this country but can be found across Europe.

I haven't trawled through these pages, so I don't know if this has been mentioned,  but for me Corn Whisky is tops. Genuine old style wild west gulping whisky. Luckily I can get it from a specialist shop in London's Old Compton Street, very hard to get, and at about £30 a bottle is expensive but worth it. 50% alc (100 proof)

so is that what the cowboys used to drink? You see them gulping it down in the old westerns, always thought they must be hard core 😂

I haven't tried it in ages, but I'd expect little has changed - one of the more seaweedy, smoky Islays.

I'm not a peat lover so its not for me.

For those who I know who love a smokey, Lagavulin occupies a place in their psyche that Isle of jura once did

Bruichladdich is about the only one that gets remotely close to that genre that I enjoy

Here's a new one on me - Amazon have started their own range of spirits, including whisky. The brand name is Tovess and they do a blended 8yo, a Highland 12yo, a Speyside 12yo and a no-age-given Islay. I haven't seen any independent reviews of them yet, but an interesting development.

They also do gin, vodka and rum.

I'm about half way through a bottle of McLeod's 'Smokehead' Islay single malt. It's pretty good, although not as extreme as you might expect from the name.

The Laphroaig was in the St Valentine's Day promotional section. So worth a look, even if you despise the commercialisation etc.

A very decent drop at a rock-bottom price. Their own-label Speyside, on the other hand, I didn't like very much.

Yeah, but it's Jura - once an interesting and individual distillery that has, since becoming part of Filipino conglomerate Emperador, found itself mired in a hellbroth of no-date gimmick names and compromised quality. It has been over a decade since they won even the most tin-pot of awards.

Thanks for the info, I was given a bottle when I worked in Scotland a while ago and enjoyed it. I was going to take advantage of the offer, but won't bother now

It's not a bad whisky, but it is nothing special any more. Resolutely average.
