So, I was browsing the sky planner and Game of Thrones series 1, episode 1 is on and I've set it to record.

I've never seen a single second of it and I imagine it to be dungeons and dragons with a few nudey bits. But should I go ahead and watch it?

Yes.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Fancy a light-hearted laugh-a-thon?  Don't watch it.

Want a show that you can dip in-and-out, missing the occasional episode?  Don't watch it.

Get emotional about weddings?  You might get very upset.

Want the northerners to be the good-guys except for Bolton?  You'll be happy watching it.

Want a far better standard of drama and writing than normal?  You'll be happy watching it.

Are you the sort of person who builds emotional bonds around characters.  You might get very upset.

Convinced that the wealthiest people are inbred narcissists?  You'll be happy with this.

Overall, I don't know many people who haven't enjoyed it.  My wife doesn't but then she's not a great fan of that much violence in TV shows.

I read about 5 of the books and eventually got bored as he really should have wrapped it up much sooner. The TV show is better, can't see it winning any awards but it's entertaining enough.

Dungeons'n'Dragons'n'Boobies. If that piques your interest, get on it.

To offer a counter-argument, I do consider myself to be quite a fan of the higher end well written cable TV dramas – True Detective, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead etc – but I’ve never gotten on with Game of Thrones at all. Tried three or four times to get into it but to no avail. I freely admit that this is probably down to the fact I’m not a fan of the fantasy sword swinging dragon chasing genre – not a fan of Lord of the Rings either – so I suspect it’s nothing to do with the show and almost everything to do with me. It’s clearly a lavish production that is well written, just not my bag. People have tried to convince me to give it a go enough times and look past that, thought there was something in it, but I've chosen to just walk away.

As an aside, well done on avoiding spoilers – despite not having seen past the fourth episode I’m pretty confident I could answer a pub quiz question on Game of Thrones correctly due to the utter saturation of the show. Not a criticism mind, it’s just an absolute juggernaut that everyone seems to talk about.

EDIT - Just as I finished typing that, someone at the other end of the office started going on about them being halfway through Season 2 at the moment!

1. I too watch The Walking Dead, but it's the only one I watch - again, Breaking Bad was another that passed me by without much interest, that may be next if it comes into my path on sky.

2. I've avoided not knowing anything about it by not having any friends and working in a backwards office in Lancashire.

It's only a telly show and it's only for 45 minutes a week. We don't all have sweepstakes that pretend to matter.

Spoken like someone who just got knocked out of said sweepstake.

For a more realistic historical drama, I have just acquired both series of 'Chelmsford 123'. :P

It wasnt the promise of boobies that did it.

It wasnt the promise of boobies that did it.

The violence and boobies theme seems to run through many popular series.....or at least ones that keep finding their way into my DVD player.....

Game of Thrones - Dragons, weddings and boobies

Rome - Romans, Caesar and boobies

Spartacus - Gladiators, fighting and boobies

The Tudors - Kings, betrayal and boobies

True blood - Vampires, Fairies and boobies

I just started watching the Borgias - it's a bit sparse on the boobies front, but it's early days yet.

My wife is more into Castle and The Mentalist but these have a distinct lack of boobies.

First two episodes have been ok, too many ad breaks though. I'm still not entirely sure what's going on.

I spied today that each series is only 10 episodes, so at least it isn't the 16-22 drag/long haul I was expecting. I'll probably do the first series at least.

I have now read some of the books. It's pretty good stuff.

Really? I found it almost physically painful it's so badly written.

It's a must-watch in my house and my daughter's. Extremely well acted and fantastic production values.

My daughter watches it even though she's read all the books and presumably knows what's about to happen.

As for not winning any awards, just check out the Wikipedia page!

My only gripes are that:

 - two of the Lanisters have turned out to be not completely bad apples.

 - Ramsay Bolton, the most evil man there is in the show,  is played by a Welshman ... Iwan Rheon. He's not even from North Wales.

;)
