Started running again in May and set myself a target to beat 25 minutes for a Park Run for the first time. It's not amazing by any stretch but I was made up to do it in 24 minutes 36 seconds today.

To tie in with the other thread I've found there's a parkrun now in Brighouse, belter! I did wonder as there has been a new path laid down a few months ago in Wellholme Park, and I'm in there usually once a week with the dog on an evening.

Can't run anymore, both knees are #######, particularly the right one

Plenty of people walk parkrun, if that's something you fancy. I'd probably find it a bit irritating being lapped every week, even with the number of fit women running past...

Many people just walk round, some people with sticks. It's definitely not a race, unless you want it to be anyway.

I can't do parkrun anymore as I work every Friday night now.

I do a fair bit of walking and I've just started cycling so I'll stick to that

Just done my 30th different parkrun event out of 117 total personal runs. Lyme Park in Cheshire and it's an absolute beast. Off-road, hilly and (on this day only) a 6foot stile due to a gate being locked.

 

I did Edinburgh last week with 629 people - amazing that a pop-up event that's been and gone by 10.30am could be so easily and slickly organised by volunteers. And this happens every week.

I really enjoy the volunteering aspect of parkrun - met a lot of nice people doing it.

 

We had 532 at Cambridge last week, which feels like a bit more than the course can comfortably accomodate. The car park fees from parkrunners are the park's biggest source of income and they spent some of that money upgrading to gravel paths over the summer, but no way to make them wider.

 

Lots of parkruns had Olympic visitors last week, because of the ITV IamteamGB thing.

Sad news from Doncaster parkrun where local runner Michael Wakefield collapsed and later passed away. No-one expects to go out for a run and not come back. RIP to a fellow runner.

Meanwhile at Bramley parkrun (yes, that Bramley) the presence of an AED (automated external defibrillator) and some smart first aid almost certainly contributed to saving another runner's life. This equipment is vital at all places where physical exercise takes place, including rugby clubs. Tony Tonks (ex Fev, Giants, Fax, eagles and now Dewsbury) runs a charity that helps spread info and raise funds for AEDs.

We at St Helens parkrun had a defib donated to us last year.  I'm one of the marshals trained in its use although frankly it doesn't take much training to know how to use it as it gives instructions as it goes along.  Given the community nature of parkrun I think a defib is a valuable resource (along with some trained first aiders of course) simply because people of all fitness levels and abilities take to the course so there is probably a higher chance of someone suffering ill effects.

Very sad news. He was a member of Doncaster AC in his sixties. His wife was there with him, sounds like even prompt help from fellow runners and the ambulance service was unable to help.

 

At Cambridge, we have several GPs & paramedics who regularly run and parkrunners helped to raise the funds to provide the country park with a defib. Only helps with one class of problems, of course.

I just ran 3 parkruns in New Zealand including one that went through a live geothermal area.

They have a rather more relaxed approach to Health and Safety in NZ and I love them for it.

I first met my wife in NZ. She offered me a lift to the Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers, where we went up to the glacier face. So I took a ride in a stranger's car immediately followed by a dangerous walk under falling rocks and ice.

We walked up to the Fox Glacier but you could only go on it if you paid a guide.

Looking at the stats for Rother Valley over 4 years there's a jump after Christmas of about 20-25% (last week saw us get a record 288 runners) and about half of them stick it out. Numbers peak in late spring, fall a bit in summer, go up a bit in the autumn and tend to be lower in December. Rother Valley has grown year on year from 40-50 at the start to a current average of about 200.

I actually got two top twenty finishes in NZ due to the number of runners being quite low!

I think the glaciers have receded quite a distance since we were there - and got a good bit more dangerous.

Anyone looking for a weekend away and maybe fit in a parkrun ?

Have a look at Poznan in Poland , good flights out of Donny , stanstead .

Good value and plenty to do around the local area .

Few numbers from todays UK parkruns .

440 parkruns in the UK Today .

Bushey Park (London?) had 1414 runners/walkers complete the run . (highest number of runners)

Wormwood scrubs had 49 runners/walkers .

Millom had 32 runners/walkers .

East Park (Hull) had around 560 , me included . Great numbers .
