As regards why the Australian government will bankroll a NRL team there

Can`t see a Pacific or PNG team in the NRL .... yet.

Much more likely to see the NRL getting the $60m V`landy`s is asking for to push League in the Pacific, all in the name of national security of course. You know the saying " patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel ", maybe the first in this case.

Loved Abdo`s statement too, adding that League is " far bigger " than union now in that region.

If it’s Oceania then RL really is the biggest sport of them all.

PNG is the closest country to Australia (and Queensland). Queensland’s most northern populated island, Boigu Island, is only 6km from the PNG mainland.

I did mean in RL terms rather than geographical.

Comparing Queensland with PNG? One of them is a cultural backwater, with decades of political corruption, a dependency on mining to provide jobs and currency, problems with drink and violence. The other...

That or Perth.

Would be a treck but they could play at St Johnsons ground - a cracking little 10,000 all seater.

Thought you were talking about Perth there.

Which bit?

The NRL are going after RU in New Zealand. Remember this: https://businessdesk.co.nz/article/opinion/inside-the-nrls-battle-plan-to-take-on-the-all-blacks ?

The NRL are going to have to be a lot more international friendly than they are now for that to be a success. The All Blacks are an international brand. The NRL isn't

Well, the All Blacks star seems to be fading and that will make it easier to attract the best rugby talent (not the fatties, they can play RU) to the NRL.

True to a point certainly, but if the the Kiwi Rugby League team can start to win consistent games against the Kangaroos it won`t be long before an annual three Test series between the Kangaroos and the Kiwis dwarfs not only the Bledisloe and SOO but also most in-bound union tours and becomes the highlight of the annual sporting calendar down here.

I look forward to the day that SOO not only becomes a battle for state supremacy but also has the added spice of being a contest that determines the make-up of the Australian team, like it use to.

When's the next NZ v Australia international scheduled for?
