The Redcliffe Dolphins

Given all the controversy on here about the club’s name at least the crowd were in no doubt as they chanted “Redcliffe, Redcliffe” throughout the game

Sections of the crowd. Many who came from Redcliffe. It's a bit of an FU to everyone else. I can be more forgiving when we hear such a thing at Dolphin Oval this weekend against the Raiders.

And Redcliffe fans should not get too arrogant and be inclusive, as it is part of the agreement to be given an NRL franchise. You are representing a far bigger amount of people and a far bigger geographic footprint.

Another issue is by trying to play the Redcliffe card too hard you are putting the force fields up to gain the support of the often anti-Broncos, old school BRL supporters. The traditional supporter bases and families of Valleys Diehards, Wests Panthers, Souths Magpies, Norths Devils, Brothers, Easts Tigers (Who were in competition for a franchise) and Ipswich Jets. Not to mention other clubs such as Central Capras (Feeder partner) and Sunshine Coast Falcons (Catchment area).

A balance can and has been struck and it comes from the club itself. The Dolphins understand this.

I think just using the moniker Dolphins leaves them open to this. I still think they'd be better with some kind of geographic identity with Moreton Bay added to the name.

AFL really doesn't exist in Qld. It's here but it's all manufactured and propped up by the governing body.

That is not really true to be honest.

There are AFL Clubs with reasonable sized Licensed premises supporting those Clubs all over Qld.

They may not be that big but they are there.

Everybody ?

Maybe he’s a fan of both.they do exist.

I used to follow Union in a small way when it came to Test matches especially if there were ex League players in the team.

It became hard to watch after awhile but I would still have a look if there was nothing else on TV

I understand. But even that term doesn't embrace the Sunshine Coast, Gladstone and Rockhampton.

The Dolphins will represent a large part of Brisbane that never adopted the Broncos spin or in some cases fans that have migrated to Brisbane from the southern states (mainly NSW) in recent times in large numbers that dislike the Broncos for the monopoly they used to have on players and  for the older Fans their role in the Super League wars.

Yea the people and families of people who have moved from down south will be a huge market. The hate the real. When the Titans came in they had a "Get them for 11 games" mentality. Which means be someone's 2nd club and then allow them to support their #1 for that one home game a year. The next generation are more likely to adopt the 2nd as their 1st.  Maybe they didn't keep it up. But it's a smart strategy and attitude.

Beating one of the most collectively hated teams, the Roosters, really got alot of people's attention from other clubs.

Having lived Down Under for quite a few years, I can honestly say that the use of nicknames is much more prevalent over there than here. The Roosters are more commonly referred to as the Roosters, than they are Sydney Roosters, for example. The Dolphins thing will be less of an issue than we all think it is.

Apparently this site says I "won the day" here on 23rd Jan, 19th Jan, 9th Jan also 13th December, whatever any of that means. Anyway, 4 times in a few weeks? The forum must be going to the dogs - you people need to seriously up your game. Where's Dutoni when you need him?

Yea, only noobs call the Sydney Roosters, Sydney. Really cheeky of them to name themselves that. But the NRL fanbase is having none of it.

In the mid-late 90s, Canterbury also went through a phase of calling themselves the Sydney Bulldogs (1995) and Balmain, (Sydney Tigers (1995-96). This was provoked by the Roosters who actually called themselves Sydney City Roosters (1995-2000). Which made a bit more sense. Canterbury were known as The Bulldogs for years afterwards until reverting to Canterbury-Bankstown.

Then you had Cronulla who called themselves The Sharks (1998-2003).

The Dolphins are following a Rabbitohs model with their clean and classic logo. Originally I was hoping to see some mention of regions in the logo. But I guess that would be too cluttered.

Today's game against the Raiders at Dolphins Oval, Redcliffe. will be intense. Surely will be some thick home ground advantage and I think it will be worth a win or two a season for the Dolphins.

As a Brit who lives in Australia, I agree, the absence of a 'geographical name' is unlikely to create a significant issue.

Wow what a game, what grit by the Dolphins. Amazing atmosphere.

2-0 to start 2023. Those games at Dolphins Oval should be worth a win or two each year.

I love the balance between big games at Lang Park and suburban games at Reddy. And of course regional games at Sunshine Coast and probably games at Rocky in the future (My speculation).

I think beating the Roosters and playing at Dolphin Oval are some things that Sydneysiders will appreciate and may win over some fans as a 2nd/3rd team.

Brilliant match, another gritty performance.

Think tonight showed the benefit of having a QRL side with heritage joining as an expensive side, gives it a different story. Playing 3 games in Redcliffe gives that real tangible continuity, even if you lose a little money from the gates.

New $54 million Browne Park redevelopment unveiled

Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment
The Honourable Cameron Dick

Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympics Sport and Engagement
The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe

Artist Impression - Browne Park masterplan

  • Funding boost to $54 million for Stage 1 of Browne Park redevelopment
  • Construction to begin this year creating 170 local jobs
  • Stage 1 involves building a brand new contemporary three-level 3,500-seat grandstand (currently 750 seats) boosting ground capacity to 7,000.
  • Works expected to be complete ahead of 2025 rugby league season.

A $54 million redevelopment of Browne Park in Rockhampton is getting closer to kick-off with the Palaszczuk Government today announcing a major funding boost, unveiling artist impressions of the new western grandstand and the full site masterplan of the stadium.

The Palaszczuk Labor Government has more than doubled the initial election commitment made in 2020 to account for significant escalations in the building industry and supply chain issues, site challenges like water and sewerage upgrades, and the need to meet professional sport requirements to host games including NRL.

The Stage 1 works involve:

  • building a contemporary three-level 3,500-seat grandstand featuring a timber structured roof,
  • four universally designed change rooms
  • public amenities,
  • food and beverage outlets,
  • media and coach facilities,
  • corporate areas, a function room and broadcast facilities; and
  • offices for the Central Queensland Capras and QRL.
  • Increasing ground capacity from 5,000 to 7,000.
  • Early demolition works of the existing 750-seat Jack Crow Stand are scheduled to commence mid this year and the main construction works to begin later in 2023.

Construction works are expected to support more than 170 local jobs, are anticipated to be complete ahead of the 2025 rugby league season, subject to weather, and labour and materials availability.

Locals will also be able to have their say on the full site master plan during Infrastructure Designation public consultation in coming months.

The procurement process for a Head Contractor will commence in the coming months.

Upon completion of all stages of the master plan, the full ground capacity will double to 10,000.

Quotes attributable to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk:

“Browne Park has been the home to NRL in Central Queensland for more than 100 years.

“This $54 million investment is a game changer for Rockhampton and will bring big NRL games to the region and create a state-of-the-art home for sports here in Central Queensland.

“This project also has enormous potential to put Rockhampton on the global map for international team training on the runway to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Not only will this redevelopment create 170 jobs during construction, but it will generate a pipeline of ongoing opportunities for the entire region.”

Quotes attributable to Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Cameron Dick:

“Browne Park is the spiritual home of rugby league in Central Queensland.

“The city that has given us Queensland greats including Matt Sing, Tamika Upton and Cameron Munster deserves a top-class regional facility that can host more NRL games and be a bigger, better home for the Capras.

“Whether it’s Rookwood Weir, the Fitzroy to Gladstone pipeline or Browne Park, our Government is committed to delivering Central Queensland the big projects it deserves.”

Quotes attributable to Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe:

“Browne Park’s upgrade makes Central Queensland even more attractive as a destination for major NRL, rugby and A-league events, as well as concerts and festivals.

“The Palaszczuk Government made Browne Park an election commitment because of its ability to super-charge Central Queensland’s economy.

“Every game, every event will add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the visitor economy and that’s great news for local accommodation and hospitality providers and tourism operators.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke

“It’s a genuine thrill for Rockhampton to receive this boost to the initial $25 million election commitment, increasing funding to $54 million to give Browne Park the makeover it deserves.

“As the home of rugby league in Central Queensland, which hosted an NRL semi-final in 2021 between Parramatta and Newcastle, Browne Park will get a new lease of life and I can’t wait for the dozers to start rolling in later this year.”

Further information:

Browne Park is the home to the Central Queensland Capras Rugby League team that plays in the Queensland Rugby League Intrust Super Cup.

Browne Park hosted three NRL games in 2021 including a semi-final clash between the Eels and Knights.

This is great news, went to a match there at the World Cup, proper heartlands

It’s always going to get trial and “country round” NRL games, but ideally with the Capras feeder club you’d like to see one Dolphins game a season there, like with the Sunshine Coast

That is a huge win for the Dolphins

They`d have to be a very good chance against the Knights next week now and then it`s off to Suncorp against the Bronc`s on Friday night the following week. 45 000 + you`d reckon.

I agree and there is the prospect of rival team selling home games to CQ too. But I'd like to see CQ as part of the home game draw.
