BBC News live at Coventry - talking about ticket sales. Interview with RLWC on Sports Day at 6.39pm tonight.

Also, hoping for 17K tonight in Coventry… which would be ruddy fantastic if that happens.

That would be phenomenal.

we'll soon find out! It will certainly give me renewed optimism for attendances going forward!

I hope they can find a sustainable way to lower prices for remaining group games or get more people through the turnstiles somehow. Schools, local teams, kids go free, I don't know but it really would help the tournament and international league in general.

I doubt there's 1700 there let alone 17000.

Agree with the spirit of what you are saying. I don't think the schools route would work that well though.

1. We are now on half-term

2. Any school trip these days is a pile of paperwork for the schools.

3. Many schools probably can't afford to book transport given all the pressures they face on funds.

Those that can are the private schools who are very much union, even in the heartlands.

Guess they could have done a deal to distribute free / very cheap tickets through schools but relying on parents to buy adult tickets to accompany and take the children there themselves. Not sure how that would have worked. Clubs might be a better outlet.

Fair enough, I wasn't suggesting any particular strategy, rather that the organizers need to do something to get better crowds in for these games. The pricing is the main issue clearly but it's difficult to lower prices when people have bought tickets.

Yes, agree, would be good to have more fans in stands. I appreciate there are variable costs as well as fixed costs around the event, but for me the look and exposure of 15,000 paying average £20 each is far greater than that of 7,000 paying £45, though revenue is similar.

A fair few have come in since the anthems... but it's not 10k's worth.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

One of the problems we have is that they clearly felt we would get big crowds and opened whole grounds. Had everyone been sat facing the cameras together it would probably enhance the experience for everyone.

It's a big ground, I think it's a decent effort for a game like this.

I appreciate your positivity, Damien, but do wonder whether they've really made as much they could have of this fixture - it's the nearly always champions against a home nation. Would a venue closer to the border and a weekend afternoon have enabled more Scots to travel?
